Keen documents both: (1) the reliable machinery of dehumanization, and (2) the possibility of opposition without enmity (fierce competitors in sports, historical rivals who maintained each other's humanity).
But these may be structurally incompatible at scale. The dehumanization machinery reliably works because it operates at the institutional level and addresses the collective psychology of mobilization. Loving combat works in limited contexts (sport, intellectual competition, artistic rivalry) where stakes are bounded and institutional pressure is absent.
The collision: Can the dehumanization machinery be refused at institutional scale, or is it only possible for individuals or small communities to refuse it while larger institutional actors proceed anyway?
The question is whether opposition without enmity is: - Achievable at scale — institutions can be redesigned to prevent dehumanification even in high-stakes conflict - Achievable only in low-stakes contexts — opposition without enmity works when the stakes are small enough that losing doesn't threaten survival - Structurally impossible at scale — the psychological pressures and survival stakes of institutional conflict make dehumanization inevitable
Opposition without enmity may require structural conditions (bounded stakes, shared community, visibility of the opponent's humanity, no existential threat) that large institutions cannot provide.
If true: tragic realism's goal of "reduce enmity while accepting opposition" may be achievable for some conflicts (professional, artistic, intellectual) but not for conflicts framed as existential.
