The alchemical opus is structured as a sequence of seven operations. Each operation transforms what precedes it. Each requires the completion of the previous operation to proceed. Together they constitute the entire work of consciousness transformation — from prima materia (raw, undifferentiated potential) to the philosophers' stone (integrated, incorruptible consciousness).
The seven operations are: Calcinatio (burning), Solutio (dissolving), Coagulatio (coagulating), Sublimatio (subliming), Mortificatio (dying), Separatio (separating), and Coniunctio (uniting). These are not merely chemical procedures. They are operations of consciousness. They describe the actual sequence through which consciousness transforms from its initial state to its completed state.
Calcinatio is the reduction of substance to ash through burning. The heat is extreme. Everything flammable is consumed. What remains is ash — the reduced form, the essential minerals, the base matter from which new forms can be built. Psychologically, calcinatio is the burning away of illusions, the exposure of falsity, the reduction of the personality to what cannot be further burned.
Solutio dissolves the ash into a liquid state. The boundaries of individual particles dissolve. The substance becomes formless, flowing, receptive. Psychologically, this is the dissolution of the defended boundaries, the merging with the larger whole, the loss of rigid form. The person becomes fluid, open, capable of being reformed.
Coagulatio collects the dissolved substance and causes it to solidify into a new form. New boundaries form. New structure emerges. But this structure is different from the original — it has been refined through the previous operations. Psychologically, this is the formation of new identity, new boundaries, new self-understanding after the dissolution.
Sublimatio raises the substance so that it rises as vapor and is collected at a higher level. This is elevation. The substance moves from the material level to the subtle level. It becomes lighter, more refined, more ethereal. Psychologically, this is the elevation of consciousness — the material becomes spiritual, the concrete becomes abstract, the individual becomes universal.
Mortificatio is the death of the refined substance. It is returned to the nigredo state. But this death is not the same as the original death — it is the death of the refined form, the release of what has been elevated so that something genuinely new can emerge. Psychologically, this is the death of the ego that was refined in the previous operations, making room for the Self.
Separatio divides what has been unified. The subtle from the gross, the pure from the impure, the eternal from the temporal. This separation is not destructive — it is clarifying. It reveals what is true about each element. It creates the space in which genuine difference can be recognized.
Coniunctio is the sacred marriage of the separated opposites. But now they are united at a higher level of consciousness. The union is conscious, chosen, honoring the integrity of each element. From this union emerges the philosophers' stone — the incorruptible result of the entire work.
The work is not linear. After coniunctio, the opus often returns to a new calcinatio — a new burning that refines what was just unified. The operations spiral upward, each cycle bringing greater refinement, greater consciousness, greater integration.
Psychology — Stages of Psychological Transformation These seven operations describe the actual sequence through which consciousness develops. Each stage is necessary. Skipping stages leads to incomplete development. The work takes time because each operation must be fully completed before the next can proceed.
The Sharpest Implication Where are you in the seven operations? Are you still in calcinatio, being burned? Are you in solutio, dissolved? Understanding where you are clarifies what is needed next and why the previous operations were necessary.
