Ego Development Theory Hub — Map of Content
What This Hub Covers
Cook-Greuter's nine-stage Sentence Completion Test model of ego development — the most empirically grounded developmental psychology framework in the vault. Each stage is a qualitatively different structure of meaning-making, not merely a different set of beliefs. The cluster spans the complete arc: from pre-egoic undifferentiation through conventional identity construction, into post-conventional deconstruction, and finally through the transcendent stages where the lens turns on itself and dissolves. Primary source: Cook-Greuter 2013 (directly ingested, N=4,510 US adults). Secondary source: Leo Gura transcript trilogy (Parts 1–3, 2020) — practitioner-synthesizer; Layer B metaphysical additions tagged throughout.
Population ground truth (Cook-Greuter 2013, Table 3): Pre-conventional ~5% | Conventional ~75% | Post-Conventional ~15–20% | Construct-Aware ~1.5% | Unitive ~0.5%
Core Concepts
Read these first — they establish the framework's logic and the claim that matters: what separates stages is HOW you believe, not WHAT you believe.
Framework and Epistemological Core
- Ego Development Theory — Framework — full nine-stage arc; content vs. structure distinction; center of gravity; horizontal vs. vertical development; pre/trans fallacy; culture-as-Achiever-cap; construction-deconstruction arc; population percentages verified against primary paper | status: developing | sources: 4
The Stage Sequence
Pre-Conventional (~5% of US Adults)
- Pre-Conventional Ego Stages — Symbiotic (undifferentiated field), Impulsive (sensory-motor, crude good/bad), Opportunistic (zero-sum, magical thinking, shamelessness, no self-reflection); pre/trans fallacy warning; defense mechanisms table; why these stages appear across the adult population | status: developing | sources: 1
Conventional (~75–80% of US Adults)
- Conventional Ego Stages — Conformist (group=reality, non-conformist conformity, shame engine, shadow floor); Expert (aboutism, last-word compulsion, 36.5% = largest single stage by SCT data); Achiever (culture-as-Achiever-cap, invisible materialism, begins noticing self-deception); defense mechanisms table; language diagnostic table; stage-specific depression types | status: developing | sources: 2
Post-Conventional (~15–20% of US Adults)
- Post-Conventional Ego Stages — Pluralist (relativism as achievement, self-immunity illusion, logic as ego defense, epistemic vertigo, sub-personality emergence, performative contradiction, ~11%); Strategist (first stage that genuinely sees all lower stages, transformational mission, asymmetric legibility, self-inflation trap, blame-free relating, non-possessive love, ~5%); construction-deconstruction arc | status: developing | sources: 3
Transcendent (<2% of US Adults)
- Transcendent Ego Stages — Construct-Aware (web-weaving, language as technology, map/territory as felt predicament, grand theory trap, non-reified self, ego transcendence paradox, spiritual ego trap, self-deception jiu-jitsu, cross-paradigmatic thinking, existential aloneness depression, ~1.5%); Unitive (direct consciousness not belief, witnessing as primary, peaks become ground, controlled folly, dissolution of evil, self/other identity, mind vs. heart awakening, no depression type, ~0.5%); Layer A vs. Layer B distinction throughout | status: developing | sources: 2
Cross-Domain Reference
Mystical Experience Interface
- Mystical Experience Stage Interpretation (cross-domain) — stage as interpretive container for genuine mystical experience; same phenomenological experience pours into radically different containers by stage; Conformist (exclusive truth claim), Expert/Achiever (neurological domestication), Pluralist (egalitarian mysticism), Strategist (developmental vision), Construct-Aware (spiritual ego usurps the glimpse), Unitive (container dissolves into content) | status: stub | sources: 3
Key Tensions in This Area
1. Layer A vs. Layer B throughout the transcendent stages Cook-Greuter's phenomenological descriptions of Construct-Aware and Unitive (Layer A — verifiable against primary paper) vs. Leo Gura's non-dual metaphysical claims (Layer B — "you are God," "reality is imaginary," "all fear is illusion" — not Cook-Greuter's). Both layers are documented; neither should be cited as the other. See Transcendent Ego Stages Evidence/Tensions section.
2. Stage self-diagnosis reliability The Strategist's self-inflation trap applies to all self-reported stage assessments. Leo Gura self-identifies as primarily Construct-Aware; his Unitive descriptions are partly aspirational. Cook-Greuter's SCT methodology (sentence completion, scored by trained raters) is the only externally validated assessment tool. First-person testimony is always suspect above the Achiever stage, where the developmental vocabulary for self-deception becomes increasingly sophisticated.
3. EDT vs. Spiral Dynamics at high stages Cook-Greuter's EDT preferred over Beck/Cowan's Spiral Dynamics for Construct-Aware and Unitive descriptions: more personally scaled, more nuanced phenomenology, more precise about failure modes. Spiral Dynamics handles collective/social developmental dynamics better. Not competing models — different resolution at different scales.
4. Ego transcendence paradox at Construct-Aware Trying harder to dissolve the ego reinforces it (the desire to transcend is itself the ego). Detachment becomes a new attachment. This is not solvable from within the paradox's frame. The contemplative traditions (Zen, Advaita, Trika) each claim working approaches; the vault does not yet hold their primary accounts. Open question: see Transcendent Ego Stages Open Questions section.
5. Pre/trans fallacy — applies in both directions Mistaking pre-egoic regression for trans-egoic transcendence (the spiritually bypassing person who calls dissolution "awakening"). Also: mistaking trans-egoic development for pre-egoic regression ("they've lost their grip on reality"). Reliable behavioral diagnostic distinguishing these two does not exist in the vault. See Framework Live Edge.
Cross-Domain Connections
- Shadow Integration — shadow formation is Conformist-stage architecture (group=identity → sealed room); sub-personality surfacing is Pluralist-stage developmental pressure; Strategist's integration is shadow work arrived at developmentally rather than therapeutically; Construct-Aware deconstruction and shadow work are the same project at different altitudes
- Grandiosity — every stage produces its characteristic grandiosity using that stage's best tools: Expert uses intellectual competence, Strategist uses developmental self-knowledge, Construct-Aware uses self-transparency itself; the recursive diagnostic never bottoms out
- Mass Movement Mechanics — Hoffer's frustrated self is the developmental psychology diagnosis of where evil comes from; mass movement is what happens when ego-bound survival minds escape themselves collectively rather than dissolving developmentally
- Guru-Tattva and Initiation — the guru tradition is selecting for Unitive-stage stabilization as its transmission prerequisite; EDT and Trika Shaivism are different vehicles arriving at the same destination
- Jinshin/Doshin — The Dual Mind — doshin (heaven-aligned, detached from motive) looks like Unitive-stage functioning from outside; EDT raises the question of whether doshin is stage-invariant or whether a Conformist practitioner's doshin and a Construct-Aware practitioner's doshin are the same state in different containers (collision stub filed: LAB/Collisions/edt-construct-aware-vs-doshin-practice-assumption.md)

Structural Notes
Source status: Cook-Greuter 2013 primary paper directly ingested — population percentages and phenomenological claims at Layer A are verified. Leo Gura transcript trilogy (Parts 1–3, 2020) classified as transcript/practitioner-synthesizer; all claims [PARAPHRASED] [POPULAR SOURCE]. Layer B claims are Leo's — not Cook-Greuter's — and tagged throughout. Next source priority: Cook-Greuter — Ego Development: Nine Levels of Increasing Embrace (full monograph, not the 2013 paper) would upgrade several stub-level descriptions. Jane Loevinger — Ego Development (1976, primary text) would provide the historical foundation Cook-Greuter built on. Hub built: 2026-04-22 from MOC Survey READY recommendation (6 pages, 4 sources on framework page). Cross-domain reference: mystical-experience-stage-interpretation.md is filed in cross-domain/ but cross-referenced here as the spiritual-interface layer for the EDT framework.
