The Stones teach that the endpoint of their work is not the development of a perfect psyche with all parts integrated into harmony. The endpoint is something subtly different: the development of what they call the "Energy Dancer"—a person who has access to all their energies, can recognize which energy is active, and can consciously choose which energy to activate for which moment and situation.1
The Energy Dancer is not a fixed self. It's a consciousness position—the Aware Ego—that can move fluidly between different energies. The Pleaser energy is available when genuine attunement and accommodation are needed. The Anger energy is available when boundaries need to be set. The Vulnerable Child energy is available when authenticity and feeling are needed. The Objective Mind is available when clarity and discernment are needed. No single energy is "right." The dance is in matching the energy to what the moment actually requires.1
This is radically different from how most people operate, which is stuck in a single energy (the Operating Ego) with all others either disowned or pushed into the shadows. The Pleaser person has no access to appropriate Anger. The Independent person has no access to appropriate need or vulnerability. The Ambitious person has no access to rest or play. The person is trapped in one movement, repeating it across all situations because it's the only movement they know.1
An Energy Dancer has several capacities:1
Recognition: The Energy Dancer can recognize which energy is active in themselves and in others. I notice my Critic is activated right now. I see their Anger is rising. The Vulnerable Child is scared. This recognition creates the tiny distance that allows choice.
Flexibility: The Energy Dancer can access different energies depending on what the situation requires. A parent might activate Protective energy when a child is in danger, Vulnerable Child energy when the child is scared and needs comfort, Objective Mind when deciding on appropriate consequences. The energy shifts moment to moment based on what's actually needed.
Non-Judgment: The Energy Dancer doesn't judge the energies as good or bad. Anger is not "bad" and Love is not "good." Each energy has gifts and costs depending on context. The Angry energy that's destructive in a relationship might be exactly what's needed in standing up to injustice. The Pleaser energy that's problematic in intimate relationships might be genuinely needed in certain professional or community contexts.
Responsiveness: Because the Energy Dancer is not stuck in a single energy, they can respond to what's actually happening rather than to what their dominant energy assumes is happening. A situation might call for the Independent energy but the person sees it asks for vulnerability. An opportunity might call for Ambition but the person senses it needs rest. The Energy Dancer can pivot.
Integration of Shadow: The Energy Dancer has done enough work with their disowned selves that those energies are available, not repressed. The person has actually met their Anger, their Neediness, their Chaos, their Ambition—not in theory but through Voice Dialogue or some other practice. So these energies are not alien threats but known capacities.
The development of Energy Dancer capacity happens through the work already described in the Voice Dialogue framework. It emerges naturally as a consequence of separating from the Critic, developing the Aware Ego, recognizing and integrating disowned selves, understanding the underlying anxieties. But certain practices specifically support this development:1
Recognition Practice: Throughout the day, notice which energy is active. When you feel an impulse, pause and name it: That's my Pleaser wanting to accommodate. That's my Critic attacking. That's my Vulnerable Child scared. The recognition itself creates the distance that allows choice.
Intentional Activation: As you develop awareness, you can intentionally activate different energies for different situations. Before an important conversation, you might consciously activate your Objective Mind. Before comforting someone, you might activate your Compassionate energy. This is not fake or manipulative; it's conscious choice about which of your available capacities to activate.
Experimentation: The Energy Dancer is willing to try a different energy in a situation where the habitual energy hasn't been working. If the Pleaser's accommodation has been creating resentment, try activating the Anger. If the Independent's self-sufficiency has been creating isolation, try activating the Vulnerable Child. Experiment with different energies and notice the different outcomes.
Wisdom About Timing: Part of being an Energy Dancer is developing wisdom about when different energies are appropriate. The Critic has a role—in certain situations, the vigilant, discerning energy is exactly what's needed. The Pleaser has a role—attunement and accommodation are real gifts. The Vulnerable Child has a role—authenticity and feeling are necessary for human connection. The dance is in recognizing these moments.
It's important to note that the Energy Dancer framework is not describing multiple personalities in the clinical sense. The person is still fundamentally one consciousness (the Aware Ego) that can access different energies. The difference is subtle but crucial: in multiple personality disorder, the different personalities are not conscious of each other and are not integrated. In the Energy Dancer framework, there is a central awareness (the Aware Ego) that recognizes and chooses between all the different energies.1
What makes someone an Energy Dancer free is precisely this: they are not trapped in a single movement. A person whose only available energy is Pleasing will arrange their entire life around accommodation, will attract people who use them, will lose themselves in relationships, will carry chronic resentment. A person whose only available energy is Independence will arrange their entire life around self-sufficiency, will repel intimacy, will carry chronic loneliness, will believe they need no one.
But an Energy Dancer can choose. In this situation, I'll activate Pleasing with appropriate boundaries. In this situation, I'll activate Independence with appropriate connection. In this situation, I'll activate Vulnerability with appropriate self-protection. The person is not stuck. The person is alive and responsive.1
The Energy Dancer framework connects across multiple domains:1
Psychology: The work of recognizing and integrating all the subpersonalities (through Voice Dialogue and other methods) is what makes Energy Dancer flexibility possible.
Creative Practice: A creator who is an Energy Dancer can access different creative states—the Vulnerable Child's raw expression, the Objective Mind's refinement, the Playful energy's experimentation, the Disciplined energy's persistence—depending on what the work requires at each stage.
Eastern Spirituality: The Energy Dancer's Aware Ego position parallels the witness consciousness cultivated in contemplative traditions—the awareness that is aware of all states without being collapsed into any single one.
History and Culture: Understanding how systems (patriarchy, capitalism, religious institutions) constrain people into particular energies and suppress others is the cultural context in which Energy Dancer work becomes political liberation.
If you have been living your entire life stuck in a single primary energy (the Operating Ego), then you have been living only part of your possible humanity. You have been one-dimensional, repeating the same movement across all situations, unable to adapt to what each moment actually requires. Becoming an Energy Dancer requires the work of separating from the Critic, developing the Aware Ego, and integrating your disowned selves. It's not quick work. But it produces a kind of freedom that is difficult to describe to someone who has never experienced it: the freedom to be whole, to have access to all of yourself, to be responsive rather than reactive.
Which energy do I spend the vast majority of my time in? And which energies am I unable to access at all because I've disowned them? (This maps the current restriction and shows what integration work is needed.)
In situations where my habitual energy hasn't worked, what different energy might have been more effective? (This shows the cost of being stuck in one energy and what other capacities are available.)
If I could consciously activate different energies for different moments, how would my life actually change? (This opens imagination about what freedom might look like.)
