While a sensation-type person is locked into what is concretely present, an intuitive-type person is already perceiving what is approaching, what is heading toward you, what is becoming.
Intuition is the function that perceives meaning and pattern through the unconscious. Not consciously, step by step, logically. But through a kind of direct knowing that arrives whole, without the steps visible.
An intuitive-type person enters a room and immediately feels the emotional undercurrent. They meet someone once and know something about their trajectory ("this person is going places"). They glance at a situation and see where it's heading ("this relationship won't last" or "this idea will change things"). They are not doing logic. They are perceiving.
The word "intuition" has been softened into "gut feeling" or "hunch"—suggesting something unreliable. But Jung's intuition is a genuine perceptive function, as legitimate and systematic as sensation. Intuition perceives what sensation cannot: the meaning latent in the present, the direction of becoming, the pattern underneath the facts.

Wakes up aware of implication. A news event immediately suggests where the world is heading. A person's comment contains a whole trajectory. A business opportunity reveals its potential at a glance. They are drawn to what is becoming, to possibility, to meaning.
A situation is immediately grasped: Where is this heading? What does this portend? What is the pattern here? They become restless with routine, with analysis, with the present moment. The future is more real to them than now.
In relationships: They are drawn to depth and meaning, to understanding where someone is heading spiritually or personally. They may seem detached from present interaction because they're perceiving something else—the other person's potential, the relationship's trajectory.
Under stress, their intuition becomes hyperactive: obsessive pattern-seeing, finding hidden meanings everywhere, perceiving conspiracies and connections that may not be there. The intuitive perception becomes unreliable, paranoid, lost in speculation. They think and think, and the thinking doesn't land anywhere, but stopping feels impossible.
Their unconscious is flooded with rigid, obsessive sensation: sudden focus on bodily details, hypochondria (every bodily sensation means something), inability to stop noticing concrete facts, getting stuck in what is rather than what is becoming. They are frustrated by this eruption ("I'm usually visionary; why am I suddenly obsessed with these concrete details?"). It is them—the unconscious compensation for being so thoroughly identified with intuitive meaning-making.
An undifferentiated intuitive-type (sensation-dominant person using defended intuition):
They perceive the world through concrete facts (this is here, that is there, these are the actual conditions). But they construct intuitive interpretation of the facts—extrapolating meaning, seeing pattern, intuiting direction—as a way of adding significance to the concrete.
The intuitive interpretation is often defensive, defensive, elaborate. Because intuition is not their native language, it becomes over-theorized, overthought, defended with intensity.
Their intuition often appears as speculative, anxious, future-oriented: "What if this goes wrong?" "What does this mean?" "Where is this heading?" The intuition is real, but it's backed by defended fact-thinking, not by the natural intuitive-type's ease with meaning-perception.

The common thread: Intuitive-types (both extraverted and introverted) experience the world through pattern and meaning. Other people's focus on concrete fact seems limited, blind, stuck in the surface. The only reliable ground is what they can perceive intuitively—what is becoming, what it means, where it's heading.
Intuition is visionary. It is often right about direction and pattern. But there are entire domains it cannot navigate:
It cannot operate in the present moment. Intuition is always slightly ahead of itself, perceiving what is approaching rather than what is. This is why intuitive-types often seem absent from actual interaction, why they seem inattentive to the concrete situation in front of them.
It cannot provide reliable detail. Intuitive-types can see the forest clearly but often miscount the trees. They know the direction but may be wrong about specifics. "This business will succeed" (correct intuition, right direction) but "we'll make our profit in Q2" (wrong detail).
It cannot sit with ambiguity and leave it unresolved. Intuition perceives pattern. If something doesn't have apparent pattern, intuition will impose one rather than sit in uncertainty. This is how intuitive-types become paranoid—they perceive patterns in randomness, find meaning in coincidence.
It cannot trust concrete evidence that contradicts the perceived pattern. Intuitive-types can ignore facts that don't fit their intuitive perception. "The facts say this won't work, but I know it will." Sometimes right; sometimes defending a failed pattern.
It cannot embrace the limits of knowledge. Intuition perceives meaning everywhere. Intuitive-types often struggle to accept that some things mean nothing, that some facts are just facts, that some situations have no deeper significance.
Philosophy: Philosophical Disputes as Type Disputes — Idealism, existentialism, phenomenology—these are not metaphysical positions arrived at through pure reason. They are the output of intuitive-type consciousness applied to metaphysics. An intuitive-type philosopher will arrive at positions centered on meaning, potential, and becoming, while a sensation-type arrives at positions centered on fact and what is present. Both are rigorous. Both are rational in their own register. But they cannot agree. The handshake: Philosophy is not converging on truth through reason; it is different perceptive configurations each producing internally consistent but incompatible systems.
Creative Practice: Vision and Emergence — The intuitive-type artist is often visionary, perceiving the work before it's made, knowing what wants to come through. The intuitive-type entrepreneur sees the market before it exists. The intuitive-type healer perceives the pattern of illness beneath symptoms. The handshake: Visionary work—whether artistic, entrepreneurial, or healing—often emerges from intuitive-type perception. But intuitive-type visions ungrounded in concrete reality often fail.
Psychology: Sensation Function — The opposite and complement of intuition. Understanding how intuition works requires understanding what it is not—what sensation can do that intuition cannot.
The Sharpest Implication
If intuition is the function that perceives meaning and pattern, then an intuitive-type person is gifted with vision that sensation-types cannot access. But intuition is not fact. Your perception of where something is heading is not proof that it will actually go there. Your sense of what something means is not the same as what it actually is.
This means your intuitive knowing, your visionary perception, your sense of pattern and direction—these are real. But they are interpretive. Another intuitive-type person, looking at the same situation, might perceive a completely different pattern and a different direction. Both intuitions are real; both are interpretive. You have confused perception of meaning with possession of truth.
More unsettling: You are often blind to what is actually happening right now because you are perceiving what is becoming. The person in front of you, the moment you are in, the actual reality of the present—you may miss these entirely while perceiving the trajectory. Your visionary perception comes at the cost of presence.
