Dualism says: God and creation are separate. Consciousness and matter are separate. Subject and object are separate. You are separate from Shiva.
Non-duality says: There is only one reality. Separation is an illusion. You are not separate from Shiva; you are Shiva in contracted form.
Shaivism claims non-duality as the deepest truth. But it's not a simple rejection of dualism. It's a recognition that includes and transcends dualism.
"From the perspective of contraction, separation is real. A person identifying as separate from God is experiencing that separation genuinely. The non-duality doesn't negate their experience. It recognizes what's actually true beyond the perspective."1
Dualism is true at the level of relative reality. There are separate beings, separate perspectives, separate experiences. This is not false. It's just not complete.
Non-duality is true at the level of absolute reality. Underneath the appearance of separation is a single consciousness expressing in infinite forms.
"You can't say one is right and the other is wrong. They're true at different levels. The person experiencing God as separate is having a real experience. The person recognizing non-duality is having a real recognition."1
Shaivism's unique position is that it doesn't ask you to transcend dualism to reach non-duality. It asks you to recognize non-duality while living in the dualistic world.
You can have a personal relationship with Shiva (dualism) and simultaneously recognize you are Shiva (non-duality). Both are true.
Philosophy (Nondual Phenomenology): Advaita Vedanta and modern phenomenology both argue that subject-object dualism is artificial. Consciousness is not separate from its contents. This parallels Shaiva non-duality. Nondual Phenomenology — both recognize separation is constructed, not fundamental.
The Sharpest Implication: If non-duality is the deepest truth, you don't have to escape the dualistic world to realize it. You can live completely in relationship, in separate perspectives, in the drama — and simultaneously know there's no ultimate separation. Both can be true.
