A pujari (priest) faces an impossible task: simultaneously maintaining the ritual form (following procedures, timing, proper offerings) while also invoking and maintaining genuine divine presence.
These two things often work against each other. Following the ritual precisely requires a certain kind of attention—methodical, procedural, focused on getting each step correct. But invoking presence requires a different kind of attention—open, receptive, surrendered to what's actually happening.
A priest who focuses too much on procedure becomes mechanical. The ritual is perfect but spiritually empty. A priest who abandons procedure to focus on presence often loses the structure needed to ground and sustain the presence.
This is the pujari's dilemma: how to honor both the form and the substance.
Solution 1 — Prioritize the Form
The priest becomes a technician. Every word is said correctly. Every offering is placed properly. Every gesture is precise. But the presence is gone. The people feel it. The ritual is dead.
This is the safe choice professionally. The priest cannot be faulted for improper procedure. But spiritually, nothing is actually happening.
Solution 2 — Abandon the Form
The priest becomes a maverick. They follow their intuition. They respond spontaneously. They trust their own state more than the prescribed procedure.
This can work if the priest is genuinely attuned. But most priests attempting this end up being undisciplined rather than free. They break the form without having mastered it, which produces chaos rather than freedom.
The rare priest who solves the dilemma is someone like Ramakrishna: completely master the form so thoroughly that following it becomes automatic. Then the priest's conscious attention is free to be genuinely present and responsive.
The form is being followed—it's happening automatically through years of practice—while the priest's consciousness is free to actually invoke and maintain presence.
This requires years of practice. The form has to become so integrated that it's invisible. Only then can genuine presence emerge.
For a person attending the ritual, the quality of the pujari's presence determines whether presence is actually manifesting or not. If the pujari is lost in following procedure, the people feel empty ritual. If the pujari is genuinely present, the people feel something alive.
A priest struggling with the dilemma—trying to hold both form and presence—is often producing something in between: technically correct but spiritually mediocre. Not quite alive, not quite dead.
