If reciprocal altruism is the foundation of friendship, trust, and human cooperation beyond kinship, then your capacity for these feelings—among the most meaningful aspects of human existence—is fundamentally a response to repeated profitable interactions. You trust someone because their behavior history has proven them reliable; you feel grateful because they've invested in you; you feel guilty when you've violated reciprocal obligations. These feelings are not transcendent; they're emotional accounting systems.

The implication is unsettling: if someone ceases to be useful to you (moves away, stops reciprocating, has nothing left to offer), should you expect your emotional attachment to them to fade? If you meet someone only once, reciprocal altruism predicts you should cooperate only if there's reputation on the line. If everyone sees you cheat this stranger, you'll pay a cost (reputation damage) that makes cheating unprofitable. But if you can cheat with certainty you'll never see them again and nobody will know, reciprocal-altruism psychology predicts you should defect. This is why humans show more altruism to identifiable individuals than to statistical others, more to repeated-interaction partners than to strangers, more when reputation is at stake than when anonymous.19 We're not being cold; we're being rationally reciprocal.
