Core Argument

The human ego develops through nine qualitatively distinct stages in a predictable sequence, with each stage constituting a different structure of meaning-making — not merely different content within a stable structure. Development alternates between differentiation moves (assertion of individual perspective) and integration moves (broadening to include more). Most Western adults plateau in the conventional range (stages 4–6), with Expert/Self-conscious (Stage 5) as the single largest category at 36.5% of mixed US adult population.
