Aboutism: The Self-Development Industry's Primary Product
The Capture
Cook-Greuter's own term for the Expert stage's characteristic failure: aboutism. Knowing about psychological development rather than developing. Knowing about meditation rather than sitting. The map mistaken for the territory, consistently, at scale, by 36.5% of the adult population — which happens to be the primary market for every self-development product ever created. The Expert is the ideal customer: sophisticated enough to appreciate the framework, insufficiently developed to notice the framework hasn't changed them. The workshop gives them a more precise vocabulary for describing their unchanged structure. They leave satisfied.
The Live Wire
First wire (obvious): The self-development industry sells aboutism because aboutism is what the Expert stage demands and can absorb. The products are calibrated to the market.
Second wire (deeper): This is not a conspiracy or even a failure of the industry. It's a structural consequence of development itself. The Expert cannot yet embody what they understand because embodiment requires the Achiever or Individualist transition — which the industry doesn't know how to produce, can't market, and wouldn't recognize if it did. The industry delivers exactly what it promises; the promise is mislabeled. "Personal development" means "sophisticated horizontal movement within the Expert stage." That's not nothing. It's just not what it says on the tin.
Third wire (uncomfortable): The person most likely to encounter this spark is operating from the Expert stage — sophisticated enough to recognize aboutism, insufficiently transitioned to not be doing it. Reading Cook-Greuter's framework and recognizing one's own aboutism is a perfect instance of aboutism. The about-ness includes about-ness about about-ness.
The Connection It Makes
Extends Conventional Ego Stages — aboutism section; the Expert stage's defining limitation named directly. Reaches into Ego Development Theory — Framework — culture-as-Achiever-cap thesis: the educational and self-help infrastructure produces horizontal Expert movement, not vertical development. The gap between these two pages that this spark names: the industry's product is aboutism, not development, and the gap between those two things is the developmental gap between Expert and Achiever.
What It Could Become
Essay seed: "Why does therapy make you more articulate without making you different? Why does the meditation app help you describe equanimity without producing it? The answer is structural, not personal — and it implicates the entire industry of self-improvement."
Open question: What would specifically target the Expert→Achiever transition rather than indefinitely refining the Expert's map? What does that content look or feel like? Who has produced it, and why doesn't it scale?
