The Developmental Gap as Exploit Vector: Why Followers Cannot See
The Capture
Cook-Greuter's primary text includes this: "Followers often do not have the wherewithal to see the limitations and possible self-serving aspects of such a leader and his or her inspiring ideas." The context is the Autonomous/Strategist leader — Stage 8 — with charisma, moral conviction, and interpersonal skill. The followers, by implication, are operating at Conformist or Expert stage. And the incapacity Cook-Greuter is naming is not naivety, not weakness, not stupidity. It is developmental: the follower's ego architecture at the Conformist stage makes independent evaluation of the relationship structurally impossible. Group belief IS reality. The leader IS the group's highest value. To evaluate the leader from outside the relationship would require a self that exists apart from the group — a self that doesn't yet exist at Stage 4.
This is the most disturbing thing Cook-Greuter says in 97 pages. She names the exploitation vector as developmental, not psychological. The follower cannot see, not because they haven't tried, but because the stage they're at doesn't have the architecture for it.
The Live Wire
First wire (obvious): Charismatic leaders exploit followers. The followers could evaluate the leader more carefully if they were more vigilant.
Second wire (deeper): At Conformist stage, more vigilance is not available. Vigilance requires a self that exists outside the group's reality to observe the group's reality. That self has not yet formed. The evaluation apparatus the follower would need to protect themselves is exactly what the Conformist stage has not yet built. The charismatic leader who operates at a higher stage has access to cognitive tools the follower structurally cannot deploy against them. The gap is not a power gap; it's a developmental gap. And developmental gaps cannot be closed by motivation or goodwill.
Third wire (uncomfortable): If this is right, then "warning people about dangerous leaders" is a strategy calibrated for the Expert stage and above — approximately 55% of the population. The Conformist-stage follower cannot use the warning because using it would require standing outside the relationship to evaluate it. They are inside the relationship constitutively. The warning doesn't reach the people it's warning.
The Connection It Makes
Direct connection to Charismatic Gaze as Acquired Craft — the genuine-presence enabling-exploitation paradox. Cook-Greuter's developmental gap mechanism is the specific structural account of why the exploit is possible even when the presence is genuine.
