The followers experienced genuine community, genuine belonging, genuine meaning-making. Those things were actually there. But the price of those things was the surrender of epistemological independence. You could evaluate reality only through the frame provided by the system.

The power is that the system delivers exactly what it promises. The trap isn't the broken promise. The trap is the fulfilled promise that comes at the cost of your ability to wonder whether there might be something better.
