Identity Reconstruction as Healing vs. Control — Are They Distinguishable?
- Nation of Islam: Ideology and In-Group Boundary — identity reconstruction that healed broken selves but crystallized into impermeable boundary preventing revision or exit - Reliving as Healing (Janov) — identity restructuring that occurs through accessing pre-verbal material and allowing nervous system to complete interrupted responses; post-reliving: energy available, patterns loosen, authentic preference emerges - Integration After Reliving — post-healing identity is more fluid, not more fixed; person can revise based on continued experience

Both NOI and Janov's reliving describe identity transformation where the person becomes functional where they were broken. But they describe opposite trajectories post-healing.
NOI: person becomes functional through crystallization into group identity. The identity becomes fixed, sacred, unquestionable.
Janov: person becomes functional through integration that allows fluidity. The identity can continue to revise based on ongoing experience.
Same starting point (broken identity). Same mechanism (reconstruction through belonging/acceptance). Opposite endpoints (crystallized vs. fluid).
The collision: *Is this difference in endpoint dependent on the system's intention (control vs. liberation), or is it dependent on nervous system access (whether the system addresses pre-verbal material)? Could NOI achieve the same fluidity if it permitted access to the materials underneath the ideology? Or is the crystallization necessary* for the healing to feel stable in the first place?
- Evidence from people who experienced NOI healing and then left: did their identities become fluid, or did they replace NOI-identity with another fixed identity?
- Evidence that other identity-reconstruction systems (therapeutic, spiritual, institutional) share NOI's crystallization tendency, or whether crystallization is contingent to NOI specifically.
- Direct comparison: a healing process that uses both identity reconstruction and nervous system integration (both NOI's mechanism and Janov's mechanism together). Does the outcome differ?
