Pratyabhijna (Recognition) vs. Anamnesis (Recollection)
- Bondage as Forgetting / Akhyati: Non-Recognition as the Only Veil — Kashmir Śaiva Pratyabhijñā: bondage is forgetting what you already are; liberation is spontaneous recognition, not acquisition - vs.
- Bondage as Forgetting / Akhyati: Non-Recognition as the Only Veil — Kashmir Śaiva Pratyabhijñā: bondage is forgetting what you already are; liberation is spontaneous recognition, not acquisition - vs. - Plato's anamnesis (Meno, Phaedo, Phaedrus) — external, not yet a vault page; see full sourcing in Why Liberation Always Arrives as a Memory — learning is recollection of what the soul knew before incarnation; the soul once viewed the Forms directly and forgot
Both systems replace "you lack something, go acquire it" with "you forgot something, go recover it" as the mechanism of liberation/knowledge — the same specific philosophical trapdoor, arrived at independently, in traditions with no contact. Both explicitly reject a rival "just learn/earn it" model as too shallow to explain why the cure feels like relief rather than achievement.
But the systems are not the same shape underneath the shared move:
| | Pratyabhijñā | Anamnesis | |---|---|---| | What's recovered | Consciousness recognizing itself — no separate object | The soul recollecting Forms external to it | | Ontology | Non-dual — no second thing | Dualist — soul and Forms are different kinds of being | | Tempo | Contested internally (see Pratyabhijna vs. Gradual Soteriology) — trending sudden | Dialectical, built through questioning (Meno) | | Emotional register of the fall | Voluntary cosmic play (Maya as delight) | Exile/imprisonment (Orphic-Pythagorean root, inherited grimly by Wordsworth) |
"Forgetting" may be a recurring structural attractor for soteriologies that need to justify why liberation feels earned rather than granted — without making it require external achievement. If a third and fourth independent tradition turn up with the same move (candidates already in the vault: the Gnostic Hymn of the Pearl's soul-amnesia, Wordsworth's Intimations Ode as a fourth data point derivative of the second), this stops being a two-tradition coincidence and becomes a genuine cross-domain concept page: forgetting-as-soteriological-attractor.
- A dedicated anamnesis concept page would need to exist in the vault (currently a gap — flagged in the research report)
- At least one more genuinely independent tradition (not derivative of Plato) would need to show the same forgetting-not-ignorance structure — candidate: Sufi ghaflah (heedlessness) vs. dhikr (remembrance), not yet vault-checked
- The mechanism-gate sentence would need to hold under scrutiny: does explaining "forgetting-as-soteriological-attractor" actually require multiple traditions held simultaneously, or does each tradition's own internal logic already fully explain its own choice without needing the comparison?
