This creates functional atheism: the institution acts as if religious claims are true while everyone knows they're false. The person participates in rituals and uses language that they do not believe.
The psychological question: What is the cost of sustained participation in meaning-structures you do not believe? Is this a minor cognitive dissonance, or does it produce the fragmentation that Keen associates with homo hostilis?
Is functional atheism actually the production mechanism for homo hostilis? That is: the person who must maintain religious conviction while disbelieving develops a split consciousness that permits dehumanization (I act as if the ritual is sincere; therefore I can also act as if the enemy is subhuman — both are institutional theater).
Homo hostilis may not be produced primarily by dehumanization machinery, but by functional atheism — the requirement to participate in meaning-structures you don't believe. The person adapts to this split consciousness by developing the capacity to act as if lies are true, which then makes dehumanization of the opponent possible (they too are just theater).
The psychological mechanism: forced false belief produces fragmentation produces willingness to participate in false belief about the opponent.
