- Samādhi Is the Only Real Discipline — the currency of the whole path - The Six Completion-Stage Yogas — Milarepa to Gampopa: "You cannot get oil by crushing sand. The practice of samadhi is not sufficient in and of itself." - Samādhi Only When Chi Is in the Central Channel — the biconditional that would reconcile them, and that nobody can check - The Flash That Notices the Grip — "despite even high samadhi attainments"

The collision

Gampopa tells Milarepa he can sit in meditative concentration for many days at a time without distraction.

Milarepa's reply is not encouragement. It is that is sand.

And Tsong Khapa states the general case immediately before it: a samādhi that "merely maintains a state of non-conceptual absorption for a prolonged period of time" produces no great signs of progress.

Set that against the same book's repeated position that samādhi is the discipline — that the absorptions are merit achievements, that the nine-rung ladder is the spine of the corpus, and that without samādhi there is no foundation at all.

The reconciliation is available and it is expensive. Milarepa is distinguishing absorption with the energies in the central channel from absorption without — which is exactly the biconditional the book asserts elsewhere. On that reading Gampopa's days of unbroken concentration simply were not samādhi in the technical sense, however they felt.

Now count what that costs.

If a practitioner can sit undistracted for days and still be crushing sand, subjective steadiness indicates nothing. Not less than it seemed — nothing. And the practitioner has no internal way to tell which kind they have, because the only available check is the sign-sequence, which becomes available after the transition it is meant to verify.

The same book says this a third time from a different direction: despite even high samādhi attainments, the holding that blocks seeing the Tao is still running, because it is invisible rather than strong.

Candidate idea

Every contemplative tradition that measures by internal state eventually produces a sentence like Milarepa's, and the sentence is the tradition detecting its own metric failure in real time.

The structure: a tradition adopts an internal marker because it is the only thing a practitioner can observe. The marker is trainable. Practitioners train it. And then somebody very good at the marker turns up who has plainly not arrived, and the tradition has to say so — which it can only do by asserting a hidden distinction between two states that feel identical.

You cannot get oil by crushing sand is that assertion. So is dry wisdom and dead tree Zen. So is the image of emptiness is not the actual experience of emptiness. Three formulations in one corpus, all of them naming a counterfeit that is experientially indistinguishable from the real thing, all of them arriving after somebody impressive failed.

If that is the mechanism, the prediction is specific: the counterfeit-naming sentences should cluster around the tradition's most trainable metric, and should be addressed to advanced practitioners rather than to beginners. Which is what all three of these are.

What would need to be true
  • Check the addressee of every counterfeit-naming formula in the corpus. If they are aimed at the accomplished rather than at novices, the mechanism holds. Candidates: `dry-wisdom-and-dead-tree-zen`, `jada-samadhi-and-the-biofeedback-problem`, `samadhi-states-are-images-of-emptiness`, `noticing-purity-is-what-spoils-it`. Four instances would put this at `[n≥3 PATTERN]`; it is `[n=2 SUGGESTIVE]` on Milarepa and Tao-hsin alone.
  • The decisive test that would break it: a tradition whose counterfeit-warnings are aimed at beginners and absent for adepts. That would mean the warnings are pedagogical rather than metric-failure detection.
  • And the harder question the collision leaves open: if steadiness indicates nothing and the sign-sequence arrives too late, what is a practitioner supposed to use in the interim? Bodri's own answer elsewhere is conduct — which routes this collision straight into Meditation in Action and the claim that behaviour is the only instrument that fits.
