Account A — a petal is a branching sub-channel. A chakra is a junction where a channel splits, and the number of petals records how many sub-channels branch off there. Account B — a petal is a spinal nerve root. Six at the sacrum, because S1 to S5 come out of it plus the coccygeal. Ten at the navel, because L1 to L5 run left and right. Twelve at the heart, T1 through T12. Sixteen at the throat, from the paired sets C1 through C8. The Petals Are Spinal Nerve Roots
These are not two vocabularies for one thing. They count different objects and they make different predictions.
Account A can absorb any petal count whatever, because nobody knows how many sub-channels branch off a junction. Account B commits: it says the numbers came off a spine, and you can go and check whether a sacrum has six nerve sets. Four of the traditional counts land. That's a genuine, unusual result for this genre.
And then the same book that supplies the checkable version quietly withdraws its own commitment: "Sometimes the navel chakra is represented as having many more petals, so the actual number used is not important."
So there's a third position hiding inside the second — the numbers came off a spine, and the numbers don't matter. Both are stated, one page apart.
A decode that makes a checkable prediction and then declines to be held to it has converted evidence into decoration. The nerve-root reading is the only claim in this whole corpus that could be falsified by an anatomy chart, and the hedge is placed exactly where the falsification would land — at the count that fits worst.
The generalisable version, and it's uncomfortable: the hedge is the tell. Where a system makes many claims and hedges only one, the hedged claim is the one the author has checked.
- Go through the two books and find every place a count or a correspondence is hedged. If the hedges cluster on the claims that are checkable and absent from the ones that aren't, that's `[n≥3 PATTERN]` and a real finding about how this corpus manages its own exposure.
- Check the two remaining traditional counts against the nerve-root scheme — the brow's two and the crown's thousand. The crown is explicitly a stand-in for "a lot," which means the scheme already has one unfalsifiable slot in it.
- The competing explanation to kill: that petal counts are numerological (four, six, ten, twelve, sixteen are all conventional) and the spinal fit is coincidence. Sixteen from eight doubled is the strongest datum against coincidence, since sixteen is not a common lotus number.
