Lung's whole architecture in Knights is a single-lineage claim: the moshuh nanren seeded the shinobi, who trained the Pacific Japanese, whom Merrill's Marauders fought and learned from; the thuggee were mined by the British into commando doctrine; the Green Berets are "like medieval ninja." Every night-fighting tradition is one tradition, transmitted hand to hand across continents and centuries. The vault's scholarly sources reach for the opposite explanation by default: similar pressures (darkness, numerical inferiority, the need to terrify) independently produce similar solutions — convergent evolution, not descent. The wolfshirt, the naga, and the Vietcong sapper all break their silhouette and strike at the dark-adaptation gap not because anyone taught anyone, but because that's what the problem of fighting at night forces. The writers building this batch repeatedly flagged Lung's transmission claims as `[SINGLE SOURCE]`/`[LEGEND]` and quietly downgraded "descent" to "functional convergence" in the handshakes.
The resemblance among night-fighters is mostly convergent and partly transmitted, and the interesting work is drawing the line — which similarities (the silhouette-break, the dark-adaptation strike, terror-before-blade) are forced by the physics of darkness and would appear in any culture, vs which (specific tools, named techniques, the three-group cell structure) actually show fingerprints of transmission. Lung needs everything to be one lineage because lineage is romance; the scholar needs everything to be convergence because transmission is hard to prove. Both are overcorrecting.
