Spiritual Bypass vs. Lesser Union: Two Names for the Same Failure Mode?

Both frameworks identify a critical failure mode: attempting unity without doing the necessary prior work.
Bradshaw's diagnostic: You access transpersonal states (meditation, spiritual experience, bliss, non-duality) before you've done the shadow work. The unresolved shadow then uses spiritual language and community to justify itself. Result: the spiritual container becomes a new hiding place for the disowned material — more sophisticated, harder to see, more spiritually justified.
Edinger's diagnostic: You attempt coniunctio (union of opposites) before you've completed separatio (the ability to see each element clearly and separately). Result: you achieve a merger state that feels like union but is actually projection or loss of self — the lesser union. It collapses when the projection fails.
