The only variable that changes across "therapy," "interrogation," "brainwashing," and "rescue" is the operator's intent and the subject's consent.

The technique doesn't know which column it's in. It works on the substrate — the exhausted, isolated, destabilized mind — not on the content or the purpose. Which means the ethics can't live in the method (the method is one method); they live entirely in intent and consent.
Coercive persuasion is a neutral technology whose valence is set only by intent and consent — never by the technique, which is the same on both sides of every line we draw. This is why "the cure that was the disease" (deprogramming) is not a paradox but the general rule: the good-guy use and the bad-guy use are the same doing, wearing different hats. And it indicts any defense that appeals to the manner of a belief-change as evidence of its rightness (see coercive-persuasion epistemology).
