Three Ways to Discharge a Debt, and No Ranking
- Ajāmila and the Accidental Syllable — a man lives badly for eighty-eight years, calls his son's name as he dies, means nothing by it, and the entire apparatus of punishment stands down.
- Ajāmila and the Accidental Syllable — a man lives badly for eighty-eight years, calls his son's name as he dies, means nothing by it, and the entire apparatus of punishment stands down. - Two Atonement Economies — and the other economy in the same volume, where sin is a conserved quantity that has to be physically moved somewhere before it is gone. - Namuci and the Foam — and a third method nobody classifies as a method. Indra cannot kill Namuci; an unnamed voice supplies the boon's two-word terms; he finds a substance that is neither wet nor dry. No repentance, no transfer. A category is located and the difficulty is over.
The volume runs three different mechanisms for getting out from under something, and never puts them in one room.
Annulment. The debt is voided. Cost: nothing, not even intention. Redistribution. The debt is conserved and moved — land to brahmanas, then a bath for the remainder. Cost: everything the debtor had. Specification. The debt was never the problem; the terms were. Cost: a correct reading of a clause.
These are not three intensities of one thing. They disagree about what a debt is. The first says a mark that can be erased. The second says a substance obeying conservation. The third says a contract, and contracts have gaps.
All three succeed. No passage ranks them, and none notices they are incompatible.
A system holding three unreconciled discharge mechanisms is not confused. Each is the only possible answer to a different question, and the question is choosing the metaphysics.
Ajāmila answers can the worst person be saved? — only annulment answers that, so sin becomes erasable. Paraśurāma answers what does mass killing cost? — only conservation answers that, so sin becomes a substance. Namuci answers how does a war end? — only specification answers that, and the moral register drops out entirely, leaving a puzzle.
What generalises: where a tradition holds incompatible accounts of one thing, look for the distinct questions each is uniquely able to answer. The incompatibility is usually downstream of a division of labour rather than of muddle — which is why pointing it out changes nothing, and why this volume carries all three without strain.
One thing would falsify it: a passage offering two of the three for the same predicament and choosing. This build found none.
