Tolerance as Ethic vs Tolerance as Absorption

- Stewart Gordon (The Marathas): Shivaji "espoused tolerance and syncretism," allied freely with Muslim states even against Hindu powers — tolerance as a genuine ethic. - Laine (Tolerant Inclusivism as a Hindu Structure): the same evidence reads the other way — "there is no more clearly 'Hindu' position than to exalt Akbar's policies… within the context of Hindu culture." Tolerance as the expansionary mechanism that absorbs Muslims as honorary kshatriyas so long as the Hindu frame stays on top. - The vault's own Religious Tolerance as Political Philosophy reads Maratha pluralism as "political technology" — load-bearing governance rather than liberal sentiment.

The collision

The same act — a Hindu king patronizing mosques, keeping Muslim officers, praising Akbar — is read as three different things: ethical tolerance (Gordon), structural absorption (Laine), and governance technology (the cross-domain page). They cannot all be the primary truth, and the dispute turns entirely on what "Hindu" means. Hindu inclusivism traps Muslims in two roles sharpens the stakes: if tolerance is absorption, then the "good Muslim" it produces is one who has dissolved.

Candidate idea

Tolerance and absorption may be indistinguishable at the level of behavior and separable only at the level of whose frame stays sovereign. Falsifiable form: wherever a tolerant majority defines the terms on which a minority "belongs," tolerance-as-ethic and tolerance-as-absorption produce identical conduct and diverge only in whether the minority is permitted to remain fully itself. Test against any inclusivist regime (Mughal under Akbar; modern secular states; corporate "culture fit").

What would need to be true
  • A case where a tolerant majority extends belonging WITHOUT requiring the minority to shed its difference — if none exists, the collision hardens into a thesis.
  • Gordon's and Laine's disagreement would have to be shown to rest entirely on the definition of "Hindu," not on any difference in the evidence (Laine concedes the evidence; he disputes the word).
