Tucker's No-Themes-Upfront vs. Deen's Thesis-as-Central-Organizing-Idea

The opposition dissolves at the form-level. Tucker is writing about memoir. Deen is writing about essays.

Memoir is testimonial. The form's job is to render what happened and what it meant in the writer's life. Imposing themes onto memoir corrupts the testimony because the writer pre-selects material to support the theme. The mirror-function fails. Tucker's rejection of pre-themed memoir is form-appropriate.

Essays are argumentative. The form's job is to make a case. The case needs a center — the thesis. Without a thesis, the essay drifts. Deen's requirement of pre-thesised essays is form-appropriate.

The two writers aren't disagreeing about the same work. They're correctly describing different operational requirements of different forms.

The deeper insight may be that the form's purpose determines whether pre-conception aids or corrupts. Argumentative forms benefit from pre-conception (the writer knows where they're going and arranges material accordingly). Testimonial forms suffer from pre-conception (the writer pre-filters the testimony into theme-supporting subsets). Investigative forms (Hari) seem to sit in between — pre-determined questions are useful; pre-determined answers are corrupting.

If this is right, the writing-craft tradition would benefit from a form-to-pre-conception map. Different forms have different optimal pre-conception levels. The current writing-instruction infrastructure mostly teaches one level across all forms, which produces failures.
