The collision

Tucker and Hari run opposite reader-destinations.

Tucker's claim: I'm not reading your memoir to learn about you. I'm reading your memoir to learn about me. The memoir-reader's destination is themselves, mediated by the writer's truth. The mirror-function is the form's actual operation. The reader closes the book having encountered themselves through the writer's substrate.

Hari's claim: the writer is the door, not the destination. The reader-of-investigation reaches the writer's subjects — Bruce Alexander the Rat Park researcher, Chino Harden the addiction-advocate, the women in Tent City. The writer's job is to make the path navigable. The reader closes the book having encountered other people through the writer's apparatus.

Both writers want the reader to not stay with the writer. Both writers run get-out-of-the-way disciplines. The two get-out-of-the-way moves point in opposite directions. Tucker sends the reader inward (to themselves). Hari sends the reader outward (to others).

The opposite directions feel productively-unresolvable at first read.

Candidate idea

The tension may dissolve at the form-level. Memoir and investigation are different forms with different reader-needs. The reader of memoir doesn't have specific other subjects to meet (the memoir's subjects are the writer's life). The reader needs the mirror because there's no other destination available. The reader of investigation has specific other subjects (the people the investigation surfaces). The reader needs the concierge because the subjects are the actual content.

If this is right, the tension isn't about which writer is correct. The tension is about form-determined reader-destinations. Different forms route readers to different places. The writer's discipline is to recognize which form they're in and to run the corresponding reader-destination.

Hybrid forms exist. Memoir that profiles other people through the writer's encounter with them (Hari-like). Investigation that uses the writer's life as the lens (Tucker-like). The hybrid forms have to manage both reader-destinations simultaneously. The management is operationally hard. Most published hybrid work fails on one axis or the other.

What would need to be true
  • For the form-determined interpretation to hold, we'd need to verify:
  • Memoir readers genuinely come for the mirror-function more than the writer-information
  • Investigation readers genuinely come for the subjects more than the writer-mirror-function
  • Hybrid forms either run both successfully or fail (rather than substituting one for the other)
  • Some evidence supports each:
  • Pure-memoir reviews often report I saw myself in this responses (mirror confirmation)
  • Pure-investigation reviews often report I now want to know more about [subject] responses (concierge confirmation)
  • Hybrid works (literary memoir, immersion journalism) get more variable reception
  • The interpretation is partially supported but not fully tested. Worth examining a broader corpus of reader-responses across forms.
