Visible Ecstasy Measures the Vessel

- The Heart Typology: Gold, Cotton, Ocean, Pond — hearts graded on a meltability scale from diamond through gold, shellac, wax and butter to nectar, and the claim that reverses the usual reading: drop a mountain into the ocean and nothing happens. Visible transformation measures the shallowness of the container, not the depth of the emotion. - Five Intensities: Dhūmāyita to Sūddīpta — and the same book's intensity scale, whose top rung is the tradition's most-cited fact about ecstatic display: `sūddīpta`, all eight symptoms at maximum radiance, belongs to the Vraja `gopīs`. - Possession-Receiving vs Direct-Communication — Cross-Tradition Priesthood Typology — and the same split found on three continents: the practitioner whose body is taken, beside the one who receives and translates without ceding the body, in the next compound, the same evening.
A tradition's own internal argument turns out to be the argument a cross-tradition typology has been describing from outside — and the two arrive at it by completely different routes.
The Gauḍīya heart typology is a claim about capacity. Some vessels are hard and deep, some are soft and shallow, and the symptom you see tells you which kind you are looking at rather than how much has arrived. That makes visible ecstasy evidence of the container, and it is stated inside a tradition that spends four Texts cataloguing the symptoms.
The possession typology is a claim about role. Across Yoruba, Akan, Vodou and beyond, the practitioner who visibly transforms and the practitioner who receives without transforming are two distinct offices, coexisting in the same ritual system, often in the same evening.
Put them together and the friction is this: one account says the difference is a fact about the person's constitution; the other says it is a fact about the job. And the tradition supplying the constitution-account also ranks the visibly-transformed at the top of its own scale, which its own typology says it should not.
The `gopīs` are `sūddīpta`. They are also, on the heart typology, whatever kind of vessel produces the maximum display — and the typology's whole argument is that a maximum display is not a maximum contents.
Wherever a tradition both ranks ecstatic display and explains it, the explanation will undercut the ranking — and the tradition will keep the ranking.
The undercut is not subtle here. It is in the same book, four Texts apart, and this build found no passage that reconciles them. What survives is the third instrument, provenance: identical tears graded by the class of person weeping.
The generalisable claim, and the reason this is worth a collision rather than a footnote: display is the one datum available to everyone, and it is the one datum every serious account of display says is unreliable. So every tradition that reads display has to fall back to something not available to everyone — role, lineage, office, credential — and that fallback is where authority relocates.
The cross-tradition typology is the strongest available evidence that this is structural rather than sectarian, because it shows the role-split existing independently of any doctrine about vessels. Three continents solved the same problem by institutional division of labour. One tradition solved it by a theory of hearts and then ignored the theory.
The prediction: traditions that split the role do not need the theory, and traditions that refuse the split will produce one. That is checkable against any system where a single practitioner is expected both to be taken and to interpret.
- The African-spirituality typology page would need reading in full, and against the domain's stricter source-tier standards — this page has read only its opening and is not making claims beyond the split it establishes.
- Rūpa's Sindhu 2.3 and 2.4 would settle whether the heart typology and the intensity scale are as unreconciled in the parent text as in the Bindu.
- The decisive counter-case: a tradition that ranks display and has a theory of vessels and reconciles them explicitly. If one exists, the claim is about Gauḍīya compression rather than about display.
