Selvalingam Pluralism vs Paramādva Vairāgya — The Same-Teacher Contradiction

Source Tensions

On the same question: what was Sri Ramakrishna's realization, and what is the Selvalingam lineage's doctrinal position on it?

The Collision

The two sources take opposite explicit positions, inside a roughly one-year window, on the same teacher, in the same lineage.

Source A — 8 Schools (2025-03-27):

The third view is called religious pluralism, and religious pluralism is the view that the reason why there are many different interpretations of the one reality has to do with the nature of that reality itself. Reality is infinitely capacious — not in a hierarchical way, in a perfectly equivalent way; all the various experiences of reality are all variously equally valid ways of experiencing the same thing... This is closer to Ramakrishna's mood, in that he felt that they were all equally valid and all equally enjoyable. You don't have to say that anyone is higher or lower than the other... It is to this view that our lineage belongs. (lines 297-302, 343-355, 497-499)

Source B — Paramādva (Mahāśivarātri 2026):

Not pluralism in the modern Western sense. "All religions lead to the same place" is the popular formulation Selvalingam explicitly rejects. Paramādva does not collapse all traditions into equivalence... The Holy Mother's formulation, which Selvalingam cites as the corrective: Ramakrishna was an avatar of supreme vairāgya (renunciation, non-attachment). Not a teacher of religious pluralism. A being of such complete detachment that he could enter any tradition fully, wring it dry of its highest realization, and move to the next — because he needed none of them and was bound by none of them.

Same teacher. Same lineage figure (Ramakrishna). Same lineage (Selvalingam's). Opposite explicit claim.

Candidate Idea — What the Contradiction Might Mean

Four hypotheses are available; the contradiction should not be silently resolved into any of them.

Hypothesis 1 — Doctrinal Drift. Selvalingam's lineage doctrine on Ramakrishna shifted between 2025-03-27 and 2026 Mahāśivarātri. The Paramādva framing is the more recent position; the pluralism framing was held at the earlier point. The revision is unannounced.

Hypothesis 2 — Audience-Dependent Teaching. Different audiences received different framings. The 8 Schools lecture was foundational survey; the Mahāśivarātri gathering was esoteric distinction. The pluralism framing is the teaching-version of the position; the Paramādva framing is the internal-version. Both circulate.

Hypothesis 3 — Reconcilable At Depth. Paramādva and religious pluralism are reconcilable at a deeper level Selvalingam articulates elsewhere — pluralism at the level of which tradition is true, Paramādva at the level of what the realization actually is. External/internal split. The Mahāśivarātri framing rejects the surface pluralism but holds the deeper structure that the 8 Schools framing was approximating.

Hypothesis 4 — Genuine Doctrinal Open Question. The lineage has not yet settled which framing is doctrinally load-bearing. Both formulations circulate because the question is still being worked out. Selvalingam is participating in the doctrinal formation rather than transmitting a settled inheritance.

What Would Need to Be True for Each Hypothesis

For Hypothesis 1 (drift): Selvalingam to publicly acknowledge the shift in a later teaching, or for the lineage to formalize Paramādva and supersede the 8 Schools pluralism framing.

For Hypothesis 2 (audience-dependent): Selvalingam to teach both framings to different audiences in the same period, with the framing chosen by audience-fit. Some evidence: the 2026 Mahāśivarātri gathering was attended by long-term initiates; the 2025-03-27 YouTube lecture was open to anyone with internet access. The framing-by-audience theory predicts the divergence.

For Hypothesis 3 (reconcilable at depth): Selvalingam to articulate the external/internal split explicitly somewhere. Not yet found in his available teachings.

For Hypothesis 4 (open question): the lineage to not settle the question over the next several years, and for Selvalingam's framings to continue varying based on which aspect of Ramakrishna's realization is being emphasized.

Implications

This collision has implications beyond the specific Ramakrishna question:

  1. Lineage self-knowledge has limits. Even living, well-organized lineages contain unresolved doctrinal questions about their foundational figures. Practitioners cannot assume the teacher knows the settled answer on every load-bearing question because the answer may not yet be settled.

  2. Pluralism vs. Paramādva is not just terminological. The two terms point to genuinely different views of what Ramakrishna's realization was. Pluralism: many paths reveal the same capacious reality. Paramādva: complete non-attachment makes every path available without making any path a destination. The second is a stronger claim — it presupposes the renunciate freedom rather than the metaphysical capaciousness as the explanatory mechanism.

  3. Lineage formation is ongoing, not complete. Ramakrishna died in 1886. His lineage's settled doctrine about what he actually taught is still being worked out 140 years later. This is structurally identical to the early Christian Christological debates (taking ~400 years) and the early Buddhist Abhidharma debates (taking ~300 years). The Ramakrishna lineage is in the middle of the same kind of work, at an earlier stage.

Status

[X] Speculative — collision filed but not promoted [ ] Being tested — would require Selvalingam's further teachings or independent lineage commentary [ ] Ready to promote — not until the contradiction is either resolved by additional source material or the unresolvability itself is established as the finding
