Even from a business kind of, like, vulture perspective — even for a vulture who just wants to eat the dead body and go — even for them it makes sense to have karuṇā. Because if you take care in nurturing these people, they will be your next customers.
A teacher spends three hours arguing that care is the base of all creative action, and then reassures the most extractive possible reader that the ethic pays. He does not experience this as a tension. That's the essay.
1. The convergence is offered as reassurance and functions as an alibi. Even the vulture should do this lands as evidence the ethic is robust. It is the opposite: convergence removes the only available evidence about motive. See Gratitude Marketing.
2. You learn what an ethic is worth at the moment it costs something. A decade in which care and revenue pointed the same direction generates no such moment. His fifteen free years are the strongest instance available — and he narrates them specifically to explain how they did pay. Even the best case is told as a convergence.
3. Which gives a test the vault can actually run. For any practitioner corpus: find the instance where the stated ethic cost the author money. The vault holds four such corpora now — Hughes, Lung, Brunson, Pashupati. If none contains one, the test discriminates nothing and should be discarded. If some do, it's the sharpest instrument available for reading practitioner sources.
4. The uncomfortable possibility. A framework in which ethics and profit never diverge may not be an ethical framework at all — it may be a description of a business run by someone decent, with the two indistinguishable until conditions change. And the conditions may never change, which would make the question permanently unanswerable rather than merely unanswered.
"It also pays" should weaken an ethical claim rather than strengthen it — and the fact that it reliably does the opposite, in the reader and in the teacher, is a fact about persuasion rather than about ethics.
