Sleep four-and-a-half hours from 9:30 PM to 1:30 AM. Then take a ninety-minute nap from 1:30 PM to 3 PM. Six hours total. Split across two periods. Done.1

That is the sleep architecture Pillai pulls out of two sutras of the Arthashastra: 1.19.20 ("During the third part of the night, he should go to bed to the strains of musical instruments and sleep during the fourth and fifth parts") and 1.19.14 ("During the sixth part of the day, he should engage in recreation at his pleasure or hold consultations"). Pillai treats the second sutra's "recreation" as authorization for a 90-minute afternoon nap, and stacks the two windows together to argue that Kautilya prescribed a polyphasic sleep schedule of 4.5 + 1.5 = 6 hours total.1

The specific clock times — 9:30 PM, 1:30 AM, 1:30 PM, 3 PM — are Pillai's modern reading, not literal sutra content. Kautilya wrote in nalikas, not clock hours. What the Sutras Actually Say

Kautilya's 1.19.20 in Pillai's quoted translation: During the third (part of the night), he should go to bed to the strains of musical instruments and sleep during the fourth and fifth parts.1 The night has eight 90-minute units. Unit three is the bedtime transition (music-aided). Units four and five are the actual sleeping. That gives 90 minutes of bed-time-getting-to-sleep plus three units (4.5 hours) of sleep, with the king waking at the end of night-unit five.

Kautilya's 1.19.14 in Pillai's quoted translation: During the sixth part of the day, he should engage in recreation at his pleasure or hold consultations.1 Day-unit six is the recreation slot. Pillai reads "recreation" as including nap-time: Take a power nap in the afternoon. Chanakya advises that the best time to take a nap is between 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m.1 So one more 90-minute unit of sleep is harvested from the afternoon recreation window.

Pillai stacks the two windows: 3 × 90 minutes night + 1 × 90 minutes afternoon = 4 × 90 minutes = 360 minutes = 6 hours of sleep total. In reality it is not the length of sleep, but the quality of sleep that matters. So if we sleep well this should be enough.1
