Francis Bacon is writing the Novum Organum in his study in London, around 1620. He is in his sixties. The book will be his most important philosophical work — the foundation of English empiricist natural philosophy, an attack on Aristotelian-scholastic learning, an argument for systematic inductive observation of nature as the path to knowledge. Bacon is trying to characterize what makes the modern world modern.

He writes a passage that will be quoted for centuries. Three technologies, unknown to the ancients, have changed the appearance and state of the whole world; first in literature, then in warfare, and lastly in navigation. No empire, sect, or star, appears to have exercised a greater power and influence on human affairs than these mechanical discoveries.1

Bacon is right about the historical importance of these three technologies. Printing transformed European literature and Reformation theology and scientific publication. Gunpowder weapons transformed European warfare and political-power architectures. Bacon's identification of these three as modernity-defining is one of the most cited passages in early-modern European philosophy.

What Bacon does not say — what he could not have known — is that all three technologies reached Europe through Mongol-era trade networks. Printing came from Chinese roots and Mongol-imperial adaptation. Gunpowder came from Chinese chemistry and Mongol military engineering (the proto-cannons at Baghdad 1258). The compass came from Chinese navigation and Arab-Mongol mediation. Bacon attributes the technologies to "unknown ancients" without tracing the actual transmission channels. The Mongol-era role in his three modernity-foundation technologies is entirely invisible in Bacon's frame.2

What This Actually Is

Bacon's Novum Organum passage is the single most-cited statement of the modernity-foundation-technology thesis in European philosophical literature. Bacon's frame implicitly equates "ancient" with "Greco-Roman ancient." The Chinese contribution is invisible to his frame. He cannot see the Mongol-mediated transmission because his historical horizon does not include it. His three-technologies passage works as an argument for European modernity by implicitly excluding the non-European civilizational context that produced the technologies.

The diagnostic for reading standard modernity-origin narratives: look for what they do not say. Standard narratives carry the cultural-political priorities of the historiographic traditions that produced them. European-centered narratives systematically under-credit non-European originators.
