That report found the "defender of dharma" legend was built using recognizable propaganda mechanics — Le Bon's affirmation-repetition-contagion, Bernays's engineering of consent — deployed by court chroniclers and devotional poets centuries before a media apparatus existed to run them on purpose. That was a category-level finding: the legend runs on propaganda architecture. This report demands more than a category. It asks whether a specific, named claim from this arc's early research — the observation that Shivaji's own guards were "conditioned" before his 1666 escape, and that a legend spreads through a population the same way — actually holds up against a real conditioning protocol's concrete steps, or whether the word "conditioning" is doing more rhetorical work than mechanical work.

The claim, taken literally

On the afternoon of 17 August 1666, two wicker baskets carried Shivaji and his nine-year-old son Sambhaji past the guards ringing his house arrest in Agra. The baskets weren't a one-time trick. For days beforehand, identical baskets loaded with sweetmeats had gone in and out of the compound, distributed to Mughal officials and holy men as a sick man's ordinary piety.1 At first the guards checked them. "The watch was kept up diligently for a few days, after which it started slackening, with the guards no longer keen on checking baskets."2 By the day of the actual escape, the guards weren't failing to inspect the baskets. They had stopped expecting anything to inspect.

In both cases, the real operation is the boring week, and the memorable day is just the withdrawal.

Where the match breaks

Here's where mechanical specificity earns its keep, because the resemblance above is real but it papers over a distinction the conditioning literature itself insists on, and the vault's own pages confirm it without meaning to. The pre-Avery protocol is explicitly associative conditioning — its own cross-domain handshake names it directly as "the most well-documented conditioning mechanism in behavioral psychology," classical conditioning wearing modern vocabulary: a neutral stimulus (the word "sleep," the operator's voice) gets paired repeatedly with a state (relaxation, compliance) until the stimulus alone triggers the state.7 Something new is installed. The mass-media era of the legend runs on fixed repetition — one frame, reproduced at scale, unchanged. If "basket conditioning" describes a real mechanism anywhere in this legend's population-scale history, it describes the twentieth century, not the seventeenth-through-nineteenth. The metaphor was reaching for the right century. It reached three hundred years too early.

What actually holds and what doesn't

Run the whole comparison and the honest map has three distinct zones, not one verdict. The literal basket escape is a genuine, mechanically real instance of conditioning — specifically habituation with a thin associative label riding on top, not associative conditioning in Hughes's fuller sense, but conditioning all the same, and the resemblance to the pre-Avery protocol's disguised-exposure, decisive-moment-rides-the-installed-pattern structure is exact enough to be more than a metaphor. The seventeenth-through-nineteenth-century legend-transmission process, by contrast, is not conditioning in any protocol sense at all — it's a diffuse, multi-author, drift-driven process where each retelling changes the payload to fit its own moment's need, the structural opposite of a fixed script repeated identically toward one target.
