Two completely different cultures, two completely different training paths — one screaming, one silent — and if the neuroscience is right, they arrive at the identical address in the brain. The question worth taking seriously: is "mushin is a disciplined achievement, berserking is a loss of control" actually true, or is it a story the martial tradition tells itself to protect the prestige of the years it took to get there?
The vault's Berserker Rage States page names the mechanism directly: transient hypofrontality, Arne Dietrich's 2003 term for what happens when the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain that plans, weighs consequences, and says "you'll regret this" — gets starved of the metabolic resources it needs and goes quiet. In a genuine emergency, the body makes a budget call: stop paying the manager, redirect everything to the departments that need to act right now. The manager goes to sleep. The workers take over.
What happens when he does: the self-monitoring voice goes silent, pain stops registering, time perception warps into pure action with no before-and-after, and memory encoding degrades — which is exactly why Norse sources describe berserkers with no clear memory of their own frenzy, and why amok runners in Southeast Asia describe the episode afterward as if someone else did it. Jaak Panksepp's lab work located a specific subcortical RAGE circuit that fires this whole sequence directly — stimulate it with electrodes and a test subject expresses full rage regardless of what they were doing a second before.
