Heru looks at the injury in his own eye. The injury assumes the form of a black pig. The pig — that is, the form Set has taken to attack Heru's eye — shoots a blow into the eye. Heru shrieks because of the inflamed state. He collapses, swallows his heart, loses consciousness. Ra orders him put on a bed until he recovers. Ra speaks: the pig is an abomination to Heru. Would that he might recover. The other deities agree: that is how the pig became an abomination to the gods and goddesses as well as men, for Heru's sake. The story is preserved in Coffin Text 157 — a Middle Kingdom Egyptian funerary text that the Akan-Kemetic tradition treats as the doctrinal-cosmological grounding for the prohibition against eating pork.1
Coffin Text 157 is one of the Coffin Texts — a corpus of Middle Kingdom (c. 2055-1650 BCE) Egyptian funerary spells inscribed inside the wooden coffins of non-royal individuals (the Coffin Texts were the democratization of the earlier Pyramid Texts, which had been reserved for royal-burial). Text 157 specifically preserves a mythic-cosmological narrative in which the pig is established as the abomination to Heru and, by extension, to the gods, goddesses, and humans. The narrative is preserved verbatim in the Akan-Kemetic source-material; it provides the cosmological-functional reasoning for the dietary-prohibition that subsequent Egyptian and African traditions maintained for millennia and that Hebrew tradition (Leviticus 11) and Islamic tradition (the Qur'anic dietary code) later inherited from the broader pan-Mediterranean cosmological-cultural complex.2
The mythic-narrative encodes a structural-doctrinal claim: the pig is the form Set took to wound Heru's eye. Set's cosmological-functional role includes destructive-disorder (per the broader Set-as-messenger-with-trickster-aspect doctrine, see Akui / Anansi / Set / Mercury). When Set deploys his destructive-aspect against the cosmic-order represented by Heru's eye (the eye of Heru being the cosmological-symbolic apparatus of perception, wholeness, and divine-protection), he takes the form of a black pig. The pig-form becomes cosmologically-marked as the embodied-form-of-disorder-attacking-order. Eating the pig means taking the cosmologically-disorderly substance into the body — a violation of the practitioner's cosmological-functional alignment with divine-order. The prohibition is not dietary-preference; it is cosmological-functional protection.
This page is the primary-text anchor for the Akan-Kemetic anti-pig dietary doctrine. It connects to Trichinosis Periorbital-Edema Biological Correspondence (the contemporary-biological correlate of the inflamed-eye doctrinal-feature), Pre-Ritual Vegetarian Discipline + 2014 Mummy Study (the broader dietary-cosmological framework), Akui / Anansi / Set / Mercury (Set's cosmological-functional role), and Divine Law-Love + Divine Hate Balance Doctrine (the broader Set-as-destructive-aspect cosmology).
The Greek historian Herodotus (5th century BCE), traveling in Egypt and recording local customs, documented the Egyptian pig-prohibition: the pig is accounted by the Egyptians as an abominable animal; and first, if any of them in passing by touch a pig, he goes into the river and dips himself with his garments in the water; and then two — swineherds, though they may be native Egyptians, unlike all others do not enter any of the temples in Egypt, nor is anyone willing to give his daughter in marriage to one of them or to take a wife from among them. Herodotus also documents that the only ritual-context in which Egyptians sacrificed swine was the festival of the moon and Osiris (which Herodotus mistranslates as Dionysus), where they sacrifice swine and then eat their flesh. Herodotus notes there is a story about why this single-exception exists but it is not a seemly one for me to tell — clearly referring to the Coffin Text 157 narrative.
The case illustrates that the prohibition was sufficiently-established by Herodotus's time (c. 450 BCE) to be observed across all-of-Egypt with social-structural enforcement (swineherds excluded from temples, prohibited from intermarriage with non-swineherds). The doctrinal-cosmological foundation in Coffin Text 157 dates to the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000 BCE) — at least 1500 years earlier than Herodotus's documentation. The pig-prohibition is one of the longest-continuously-attested dietary doctrines in the human historical record.
It is Sunday morning. You are preparing for the week's first formal practice. You walk through your kitchen reviewing what is currently in the refrigerator. There is bacon in the meat-drawer, leftover-ham from a recent meal, a package of breakfast-sausage. You stand at the open refrigerator and let the doctrine settle: this is the cosmologically-disorderly substance the Akan-Kemetic tradition has marked as prohibited for millennia. You take the three items out. You put them in a bag. You walk them to the outdoor garbage. You wash your hands. You return to the refrigerator and notice what remains — vegetables, fruits, fish, chicken, beef. You make a new shopping-list excluding pork-products. You attach the list to the refrigerator with a magnet. Over the coming weeks the kitchen reorganizes around the new pattern. The Akan-Kemetic doctrinal-frame becomes embodied in the everyday physical-architecture of how you eat.
First failure: treating the prohibition as cultural-preference rather than cosmological-functional protection. The doctrine specifies cosmological-functional content; treating it as preference loses the operational-significance.
Second failure: importing the prohibition without understanding the cosmological-narrative grounding. The doctrine works through the practitioner understanding why the prohibition exists; mere rule-following without doctrinal-understanding produces inconsistent application.
Third failure: extending the doctrine into universal-prohibition-claims about all-pork-consumers globally. The Akan-Kemetic doctrine specifies the cosmological-functional content for practitioners within the cosmological-doctrinal frame; it does not require all-humans-everywhere to observe the prohibition.
Fourth failure: ignoring the contemporary-biological evidence that supports the doctrinal-warning. The trichinosis correspondence (see Trichinosis Periorbital-Edema) provides empirical-medical support for the cosmological doctrine; dismissing it loses the doctrinal-biological convergence.
Coffin Text 157 is mainstream-attested Egyptological primary-text material from the Middle Kingdom funerary corpus. The Herodotus documentation is mainstream-attested Classical-historiography. The doctrinal-cosmological grounding the Akan-Kemetic tradition foregrounds is documented in the primary-text material; mainstream Egyptology has not typically emphasized the contemporary-doctrinal-operational implications the practitioner-tradition draws.
The cross-tradition pig-prohibition (Egyptian, Hebrew, Islamic, parts of African continued practice) is one of the most widely-documented dietary-doctrinal continuities in human-religious history. The cosmological-doctrinal grounding varies across traditions; the operational-prohibition is structurally-similar.
The Akan-Kemetic Coffin Text 157 reading and the Jewish Levitical pig-prohibition and the Islamic Qur'anic pig-prohibition converge on the operational-prohibition while diverging on doctrinal-grounding. The Levitical text grounds the prohibition in clean vs unclean categorization without elaborate mythological-narrative. The Qur'anic text grounds it in divine-command without elaborate cosmological-mythic content. The Akan-Kemetic frame grounds it in specific cosmological-mythic narrative (Set-as-pig wounding Heru's eye). The convergence-insight: multiple traditions independently arrived at the operational-prohibition; the cosmological-doctrinal groundings differ in elaboration-level but converge on something about pig-consumption is operationally-problematic for practitioners pursuing cosmological-functional alignment.
The Coffin Text 157 anti-pig doctrine reaches into three vault domains in ways that produce insight no single domain generates alone.
Biology: Trichinosis Parasitology and Cooking-Temperature Requirements — Trichinella spiralis (the trichinosis-parasite) is endemic to pig-meat. Inadequately-cooked pork carries serious parasitic-infection risk. Contemporary food-safety regulations require specific cooking-temperatures (62-71°C / 145-160°F) to kill the parasite. A classic-symptom of trichinosis-infection is periorbital edema — swelling around the eyes (see Trichinosis Periorbital-Edema page for full treatment). The Coffin Text 157 narrative describes Heru's eye becoming inflamed and stormy after the black-pig-attack — the eye-symptom that contemporary parasitology identifies as the classic trichinosis-marker. The narrative's biological-accuracy is striking; the Egyptian temple-priests appear to have understood the empirical-medical reality that uncooked-pork consumption produces eye-region inflammation and encoded this understanding in cosmological-mythic form. The cross-domain insight: traditional dietary-doctrines often track empirical-medical reality the cosmological-mythic vocabulary obscures from contemporary readers but that contemporary medical-research has independently confirmed. The Akan-Kemetic frame's preservation of Coffin Text 157 alongside the contemporary trichinosis-research produces convergence-evidence that lends interpretive weight to taking the doctrine seriously rather than dismissing it as arbitrary-cultural-prohibition.
History: Pig Prohibition Cross-Cultural Pattern and Pre-Modern Public Health — The pig-prohibition appears in multiple geographically-separated pre-modern traditions: Egyptian, Hebrew, Islamic, parts of African continued practice, with parallels in some Asian traditions. The cross-cultural convergence has been studied as one of the most consistent dietary-doctrinal patterns in human-cultural history. Historical-archaeological research has documented that the prohibition correlates with specific environmental-conditions (hot climates where pig-meat preservation was difficult and parasitic-infection rates from undercooked pork were high) and with specific cultural-economic conditions (pastoral-nomadic cultures where pigs were operationally-difficult to maintain). The cross-domain insight: traditional dietary-prohibitions typically encoded pre-modern public-health knowledge in cosmological-religious vocabulary because cosmological-religious authority was more compliance-effective than contemporary regulatory-authority. The Akan-Kemetic Coffin Text 157 framework is one specific instance within the broader pre-modern public-health doctrinal-preservation pattern.
Anthropology: Dietary Taboos as Cultural Marker and Social Organization — Dietary taboos function simultaneously as biological-protective-doctrine and as cultural-marker / social-organizational mechanism. Herodotus's documentation of Egyptian-swineherd exclusion from temples and intermarriage illustrates the social-organizational layer — the dietary-doctrine produced occupational-and-marital-segregation structures that organized broader-cultural-life. The Akan-Kemetic preservation of the doctrine extends both functions into contemporary-practitioner contexts: operational-biological protection from parasitic-infection plus cultural-marker function distinguishing-practitioners-from-non-practitioners. The cross-domain insight: dietary-doctrines are operationally-multifunctional in ways that purely-biological or purely-cultural-marker analyses miss; the Akan-Kemetic frame preserves both functions through the cosmological-mythic narrative-grounding.
The Sharpest Implication. The Coffin Text 157 doctrine, combined with the trichinosis-research correspondence, implies that traditional dietary-cosmological doctrines often encode empirical-medical reality in cosmological-mythic vocabulary the contemporary scientific-frame typically dismisses. Practitioners interested in dietary-decision-making could benefit from taking traditional-cosmological-dietary-doctrines as hypotheses about pre-modern public-health knowledge worth investigating empirically rather than as arbitrary-cultural-superstition.
Generative Questions.
