Example: If a news story covers a crime extensively, your sense of crime frequency increases even though the crime might be statistically rare. The coverage makes it cognitively available.
Mechanism: You focus on specific information about an individual case and ignore how often that case actually occurs. If a test for a disease is 95% accurate and comes back positive, you think there's a 95% chance you have the disease — but if the disease is rare, the actual probability might be 5%.
Why it works: Specific information feels more relevant than statistical information, even when the statistical information is more predictive.

Example: "My neighbor used this investment and got rich" is emotionally compelling, but if 99% of people who try the investment lose money, the specific example is misleading. Manipulators emphasize the success story and hide the base rate.

Why it works: Stopping feels like admitting the previous investment was wasted. Continuing feels like trying to salvage the situation.

Example: You've invested $5,000 in a failing business venture. Someone says "If you invest another $10,000 now, we can turn this around." Rationally, the past $5,000 is irrelevant — what matters is whether the next $10,000 is a good investment. But the sunk cost makes you feel obligated to try to save what's already lost.
Mechanism: You trust information from perceived authorities more than equivalent information from non-authorities, even when the authority has no specific expertise in that domain.
