Source Tensions

The vault holds the same man from two evidence-vantages, and they disagree at four specific joints:

• The cyanide. Radzinsky's File leans into the legend the killers themselves told — the poisoned cakes and wine that didn't kill him, the unkillable monk who had to be shot and drowned. Moynahan, working the forensics from the outside, doubts the cyanide ever did its job at all: maybe it was weak, maybe degraded, maybe the dose was botched, maybe the whole "he wouldn't die" story is the assassins gilding their own nerve. Unkillable saint vs. sabotaged poison.
• The women at the murder. The two accounts don't agree on who was present and what role women played around the killing at the Yusupov palace — a divergence in the cast list itself, where testimony populates the room and surveillance/forensics can't confirm the populating.
• The prophecy letter. Radzinsky's inside corpus carries the self-foretelling death-letter closer to face value; Moynahan dismantles it as a forgery on stylometric grounds (a peasant's hand wouldn't punctuate like that). Authentic prophecy vs. literate fake.
• The hemophilia causality. Did the boy's disease create Rasputin's hold, or merely confirm an obsession that was already there? Moynahan's outside frame argues the mystical need pre-existed and hemophilia just gave it a recurring stage; the murder conspirators (and much of the inside legend) treat the healing as the origin of the power.

The Collision

Set side by side, the two files don't just differ on facts — they differ because of where they stand. Radzinsky's File is built from testimony: the people inside the spell, the interrogated, the used, the devout. Moynahan's is built from residue: the Okhrana watch, the war ministry's paper, the forensic read of the documents. The inside file is generous to the legend because legend is what the inside experienced. The outside file corrodes the legend because residue has no stake in it. So the four disagreements aren't four separate quarrels — they're one quarrel, repeated: testimony preserves the marvel, surveillance dissolves it, and neither vantage can fully audit the other. The reflexive sting is that the vault chose this. It ingested both files knowing they'd fight, and the fight is now a feature of the knowledge base, not a bug to resolve.

Candidate Idea

The same historical figure documented through two evidence-modes (inside-testimony, outside-surveillance) yields not a richer single portrait but two structurally different figures — and the disagreements cluster predictably: testimony inflates the supernatural and the dramatic, surveillance deflates them, and the gap between them is a measurable signature of vantage rather than a fact still to be settled. The "real" Rasputin isn't a third figure you average toward; he's the shape of the disagreement itself.

What Would Need to Be True

• The four divergences would need to actually sort by vantage and not by source quality alone — i.e. show that Radzinsky deflates somewhere and Moynahan inflates somewhere, so it isn't just "the skeptic vs. the dramatist." (The hemophilia point is the test: there the outside file is the more deflationary, which fits; need to confirm the pattern isn't just Moynahan being the debunker by temperament.)
• At least one divergence would need a tiebreaker from a third source-type (a forensic/medical fact, a dated document neither author controls) to show the gap is about vantage and not just two equally-motivated guesses.
• The "vault chose the fight on purpose" claim would need the multi-warrant architecture to actually be doing work here the way it does in the Shivaji (Purandare/Laine) and Wallis/White pairs — i.e. this is a real warrant-clash, not just two books that happen to disagree.

Status

Speculative. Strong candidate to promote once the vantage-sorting is verified against the hemophilia counter-case and one divergence gets a third-source tiebreaker. Pairs with Essay Seed — Two Files, One Man (this collision is the catalog; the essay seed is the frame) and feeds The Watch That Outlived the Confession (the principle adjudicating the prophecy-letter and cyanide divergences). Mirrors the vault's Purandare/Laine multi-warrant pattern — same man, disagreeing warrants, held rather than merged.
