Acuff's compressed principle: "When we tell them what it means, they are likely to become skeptical... If they say it, it's true."1 The asymmetry is structural. The same statement carries different cognitive weight depending on which mouth it comes out of. Operator-articulated claims register as biased; prospect-articulated claims register as true.
The principle: when the operator wants the prospect to believe X, the operator should engineer the conversation so the prospect articulates X themselves. The prospect's brain treats their own articulation as truth (it came from their own mouth); the same content from the operator's mouth gets discounted (it came from a salesperson).
Concrete: instead of telling the prospect "this will save you money," the operator asks "what would happen if you could cut that cost by 15%?" — and the prospect says "that would save us money." Same conclusion. Different source. Different cognitive weight.
The book's worked example2: instead of operator saying "we will save you money," the operator asks targeted questions until the prospect says "well, that means it will save us money." Operator: "is that what you'd be looking for?" Prospect: "yes." The conclusion is identical; the path to it is reversed.
The mechanism is the self-persuasion principle (Self-Persuasion) applied at the truth-claim level. Self-articulated truth-claims are encoded as beliefs; received truth-claims are encoded with attribution-tags that make them vulnerable to skepticism.
The deeper claim: this isn't a manipulation; it's how human cognition actually works. Operators who try to bypass the asymmetry by stating truth-claims aggressively just produce more skepticism. Operators who engineer the conversation for prospect-articulation produce belief.

The book's data-spewing case3: an operator sharing data with a prospect. Old-model: "this product saves companies your size $50K annually on average." Prospect's brain: "marketing claim, salesman bias, probably exaggerated."
New-model: operator shares the same data, then asks "what does that mean for an operation like yours, given what you told me?" Prospect: "well, if that's accurate for our size, that's around $40-50K we'd be saving." The data is identical. The prospect's brain registered the second version as their own calculation — it survives the call.
You list five truth-claims you typically state about your product. For each, you construct the question that would cause the prospect to state the claim themselves. Most operators discover this is harder than it sounds — converting claims to claim-producing-questions requires specific question-craft. With two weeks of practice, the conversion becomes natural.
The cognitive-science foundation is well-established. Self-perception theory (Bem 1972), cognitive-dissonance research (Festinger 1957), and self-persuasion studies (counter-attitudinal advocacy, role-playing research) all converge on the finding that self-generated reasoning carries different cognitive weight than received reasoning. The sales-application is well-grounded.
A live tension: the asymmetry isn't binary. Some operator-claims do carry weight — particularly when the operator has demonstrated credibility through prior behavior, or when the claim is about technical specifications the prospect can't reasonably articulate themselves. The book treats the asymmetry as universal; in practice it operates on a spectrum that depends on operator-credibility and content-type.
Open question: the asymmetry has been measured in laboratory contexts. Has it been measured in actual sales-call data? Could the asymmetry-effect-size be quantified by comparing prospects who articulated vs prospects who received the same claim?

Psychology — Self-Perception Theory (Bem): Daryl Bem's self-perception theory (1972) shows that people infer their own attitudes from observing their own behavior. The principle applies here: prospects who hear themselves articulate something infer that they believe it. Sales literature uses the principle without citing its empirical foundation.
Eastern Spirituality — Koan and Self-Discovery: contemplative traditions use the same mechanism — the teacher engineers conditions for the student's own discovery rather than transmitting the discovery directly. Cross-domain: durable belief comes from the recipient's own articulation regardless of the domain.
Sharpest Implication. The asymmetry is the cognitive substrate the entire methodology rests on. Operators who don't internalize it run technically-correct NEPQ that doesn't quite work because they're still stating truth-claims at moments that should be engineered prospect-articulations.
