To "diamond-bind" mercury is to make the volatile, fugitive, runaway metal fixed and indestructible — to give the fleeting fluid the permanence of diamond. The whole problem with mercury is that it won't hold still; diamond-binding is the cure, the final fixing that makes it stable enough to confer immortality.
Why does the supreme mercury heal cripples and make ten-million-fold gold and confer immortality? Because all three are the same power: the power of perfect fixing. Mercury that has been made indestructible (diamond-bound) can pass that indestructibility on — to a broken body (made whole), to base metal (made permanent gold), and to the alchemist (made deathless). The healing, the transmuting, and the immortalizing are one capacity: the power to fix the unfixable, to make the perishable permanent.
This is why it's the verification gate (recall "as in metal, so in the body"). You don't use just any mercury on your body — you use mercury that has already demonstrated, on metal and on broken bodies, that it can fix and perfect. The shared word hints at it, though White treats the alchemy as overwhelmingly Hindu.

White's reading — that it's the summit of the ladder, the mercury that has earned ingestion — follows directly from the text's own framing (it's what the Alchemical Man operation requires). The open question about whether it was ever produced, or is a theoretical ideal, is the same one that hangs over the whole immortality project: the textualist describes the summit; whether anyone reached it is bracketed.
Plain version: the most fugitive, unstable thing, if you could make it permanent, would be the most powerful thing of all — and a whole craft can aim at that one transformation.
