The "evil eye" (dṛṣṭi) isn't a single mechanism. It splits into three distinct types based on what the looking-spirit wants from the native. Larsen identifies the three sub-types and the chart-signatures for each:1
Three different intentions, three different chart-signatures, three different remediation-paths.
Diagnostic for each type:2
Sub-type characteristics:
Spirits in Vedic cosmology operate on different motivational structures. Some are hungry (need offerings — Bali). Some are aggressive (want destruction — Hanthu). Some are parasitic (drain vitality without consuming — Ranthu). The three types map onto three categories of spirit-motivation found across cosmologies.
The chart's mechanism for distinguishing them: which house gets involved. Lagna-association alone codes Ranthu (vitality-drainage). Lagna + 6th/8th codes Hanthu (death-house-involvement = literal-killing-intent). Specific-house Rāhu/Gulika placement codes Bali (offering-target identified by house-context).
This page extends Bādhaka Source — fifth of the six specific Bādhaka-types.
It connects to Nine Curse Types — Dṛṣṭi is the 9th of the eleven Praśna-Mārga miseries; the dṛṣṭi-bādhaka is one mechanism of dṛṣṭi-curse delivery.
It connects to Abhicāra Black Magic — Hanthu-Kamas is operationally connected to Abhicāra mechanics.
Native A: Bādhakeśa joined the Lagna lord, both in the 11th house. Ranthu Kamas — Bādhaka-Lagna association without 6/8 involvement. Symptoms: chronic low-grade anxiety, persistent fatigue, recurrent minor illnesses.
Native B: Bādhakeśa joined the Lagna lord, both in the 8th house. Hanthu Kamas — Lagna-Bādhakeśa association with 8th-house involvement. Severe predictive signature. Symptoms: serious illness, near-death experiences, acute crisis episodes. Remediation urgent.
Native C: Rāhu in the 4th house, no Bādhaka-Lagna association. Bali Kamas — Rāhu in 4th specifically codes spirit wanting offering. The 4th-house context suggests offering should be at home, perhaps installing a deity-image in the home (Sarpa-installation if Rāhu's serpent-aspect is dominant).
The three readings produce three different remediation-protocols from three structurally-distinguishable chart-configurations.
You identify Dṛṣṭi Bādhaka through chart-signature. You check for Bādhaka-Lagna association first. If present:
You check Rāhu/Gulika 4-5-7-8 placements. If present → Bali. Identify the house-context for the offering-location.
You prescribe type-specific remediation. Ranthu = vitality-restoration (Sun-graha worship, Mṛtyuñjaya for general protection). Hanthu = urgent severe protection (Mṛtyuñjaya as primary, plus Devī-aggressive-form worship like Cāmuṇḍī). Bali = chart-house-specific offering protocol.
You apply generic Dṛṣṭi-remediation without checking the sub-type. Severe Hanthu cases get insufficient remediation.
You confuse the 6th-house-Rāhu placement (which codes enemies — human action) with Bali Kamas (spirit-action). The chart distinguishes; the reading must too.
You miss the Bādhakeśa-with-6/8 rule for Hanthu. The 6/8 involvement is the critical Hanthu-marker.
The framework is Praśna-Mārga rooted. The three-type taxonomy is operationally clean.
Open question: empirical accuracy of the Hanthu prediction (urgent severe protection requirement). Hard to test ethically.
All vault lineages know Dṛṣṭi-Bādhaka mechanisms. Larsen's three-sub-type explicit taxonomy is operationally sharp.
psychology: The Evil Eye as Projective Malice — modern social-psychology research on envy and malice as transmissible-affective-states aligns with the dṛṣṭi-mechanism. The cross-domain insight: the evil-eye phenomenology is empirically real (envy-effects on the target's wellbeing) regardless of metaphysical commitments; Vedic frames it as spirit-action, psychology frames it as projective-affect, both observe the same effect.
history: Evil-Eye as Cross-Cultural Universal — virtually every ancient culture had specific evil-eye remediation practices. The Vedic three-sub-type taxonomy is operationally precise; cross-cultural comparison would clarify which sub-types map onto which traditions' practices.
If Dṛṣṭi-Bādhaka's three-sub-type taxonomy is real, then generic "protection from evil eye" practices misfire on chart-specific sub-type cases. Type-specific protection is structurally precise.
