The tension worth flagging directly: Greene frames Edison's path as a genuine, viable alternative route to mastery, on equal footing with mentored apprenticeship — but nearly everything else in the chapter argues mentorship compresses the timeline and improves the outcome. Edison's own ten-year self-education roughly matches the longer end of Greene's own estimate for unmentored, self-directed learning stated earlier in the chapter ("this could take ten years, maybe more"). The Reversal reads less like proof that self-teaching works as well as mentorship, and more like proof that a sufficiently relentless person can still reach mastery on the slower path — which is a real finding, but a different and more modest one than Greene's triumphant framing suggests.
Open question. Edison's decade of self-education happened in an era with far less codified, far more scattered scientific knowledge than exists today — meaning a self-directed learner in his position had to build genuine originality just to make sense of a fragmented field. Does the same advantage (freedom from inherited orthodoxy) hold in a modern field where the self-taught path runs through the same standardized online material everyone else uses, and genuine fragmentation of the knowledge base no longer exists?
Edison's "turned lack of formal direction into a competitive advantage" is the same underlying claim Greene makes about Temple Grandin in Temple Grandin and the Reversal from Chapter I — both Reversal cases in the book share the identical structural move: start from an acknowledged deficit (no mentor here, no conventional cognitive toolkit there), and reframe the deficit as the source of an otherwise unavailable advantage. The Guru Is Not a Person but Transmission — that page argues transmission requires physical proximity and cannot fully occur through text alone. Edison's case is the direct challenge to that claim: a purely textual relationship with Faraday, sustained for decades with no possibility of correction or dialogue, still produced one of history's most productive inventors.
