"Elizabeth Was a Carrot" — Pedagogy as Play (MacCulloch)

The Trap: How to Make Smart Students Walk Into Their Own Failure

A room full of sixth-formers. MacCulloch is at the front. He hands them a list of twenty statements about Elizabeth the First. Above the list, a rubric: Which of the following are historical statements and which aren't?

The first one is easy. "Elizabeth the First came to the throne in 1558." Yes. Historical statement. Not interesting, but true and checkable.

The second one is also easy. "Elizabeth the First came to the throne in 1559." No. She didn't. Not a historical statement, but the failure has taught something — you have to be able to check, to disprove, to prove.

The list moves to harder ones. "Elizabeth the First was a true daughter of her father." Take it two ways. Metaphorically, she was as magnificent as Henry VIII — but that's not strictly history. Literally, she was his genetic daughter — possibly provable with DNA work, but not yet proved. The students learn that what kind of statement is being made affects whether and how it can be a historical statement.1

The list works its way down. The students, by now, are getting in the spirit of the game. They're thinking, comparing, calibrating. They're invested. They want to do well.

Then question twenty. "Elizabeth the First was a carrot."1

The students hesitate. Their first instinct is no, obviously not. But by now they're playing a sophisticated game. They've been rewarded for clever readings, for catching the layers. So they think harder. Maybe it's a Tudor idiom? They start constructing the rescue. Tudor metaphor for red hair, ginger people called "carrots" — Elizabeth had ginger hair, after all. The pieces fit. The students hand MacCulloch the rescue: yes, it could be a historical statement, decoded as a Tudor idiom referring to her appearance.

MacCulloch's answer: "Well done, I say. In fact, I made it up. It's not true at all. There was no such idiom. And I didn't suggest that to you. That was your idea. Clever one, but wrong."1

That last sentence is the whole curriculum. Clever one, but wrong. The students were intelligent. They were thinking. They constructed a plausible interpretation. And they were entirely wrong, because the interpretation was generated by their own pattern-matching rather than by any documentary evidence. The carrot question is a trap specifically aimed at clever students — the ones whose intelligence lets them rationalize anything.

What the Trap Targets

The pedagogy is precise. The carrot question doesn't catch students who refuse to engage; those students say "no, that's absurd" and stop. It doesn't catch students who lack imagination; they can't construct the rescue. It catches the students MacCulloch most cares about teaching: the ones smart enough to fabricate a plausible explanation for any statement, however invented. Those students need to be shown, in their own failure, that cleverness is not the same as historical knowledge.

The historical statement requires evidence. Not just plausibility. Not just consistency with what we know. Actual documentary or material evidence that the claim is true. The smart student who can construct plausibility without evidence is, in MacCulloch's terms, doing something dangerous: she is generating interpretations that feel historical without actually being so. The interpretive apparatus has gotten ahead of the evidential ground. The carrot game stops that disconnection by making the student commit to the unfounded interpretation and then revealing it as unfounded.

This is anti-pattern-matching as a discipline. Most education rewards pattern-matching: see the cues, fit them to the framework, produce the right answer. Historical work demands a stricter test: see the cues, fit them to the framework, then check whether the framework actually corresponds to evidence. The check is what separates the historian from the clever student. The carrot question installs the check by showing the student what it feels like to construct a framework that has no evidential basis. Once you've fallen for "carrot," you've experienced the failure mode in your own thinking, and the experience trains you to look for it in your own subsequent interpretations.

The Play Frame

The pedagogy is delivered through play. MacCulloch is explicit about this: "History is about play like all good human activities and if we don't enjoy it then it's not worth doing but it's also passionately important to get it right because it's about sanity."1

Play matters. Not because it makes learning easier (though it does) but because it activates a different mode of engagement. Lecture mode rewards passive absorption. Test mode rewards anxious performance. Play mode rewards experimentation, risk-taking, willingness to commit to a position you might be wrong about. The carrot question works because it's a game — the students are willing to construct the Tudor-idiom rescue because the stakes feel low, and the willingness is what lets them experience their own failure mode in real time.

MacCulloch is reaching for something the contemplative and martial traditions have known for a long time: serious training happens through play that is taken seriously. The student who is playing without seriousness doesn't learn anything; the student who is serious without play can't access the failure-experience the lesson requires. The combination — play that is taken seriously enough to commit, with stakes low enough that the failure can be safely metabolized — is the optimal training environment.

The combination also explains why MacCulloch's pedagogy ends with sanity. The game is play. The lesson is about sanity. The two are tied together: a culture that has lost the capacity for play with serious stakes has lost something important about how training and self-examination work. Modern formal education tends to lose this capacity. Examinations are serious without being playful; entertainments are playful without being serious. The combination MacCulloch is recovering is older than either modern form.

The Game's Structural Lesson

Pulling back from the carrot specifically, the twenty-question game teaches a sequence of related lessons:

Some statements are checkable and dull. Q1 ("throne 1558") is true. It's not interesting. Historical work has to start with the boring true statements as ground.

Some statements are checkable and false. Q2 ("throne 1559") is false. Knowing it's false is itself historical knowledge — the disprovability is part of what makes a statement historical.

Some statements have ambiguous referents. Q "true daughter of her father" requires you to specify what kind of claim is being made before you can evaluate it.

Some statements are unprovable in principle. Various intermediate questions probably touch on this — claims about Elizabeth's inner thoughts, motivations, private experiences. These can be discussed but not historically settled.

Some statements are nonsense dressed up as cleverness. Q20 ("carrot") is the climax. The lesson is that human ingenuity is capable of constructing plausibility for almost anything, and the historian's discipline is what stops that capacity from being deployed as truth.

Run together, the twenty questions form a curriculum in what historical work actually is. It's not the recitation of facts. It's the disciplined evaluation of claims against evidence, including the disciplined rejection of clever-but-unsupported interpretations of one's own making.

The Sanity Frame Returns

The carrot game closes on the same note MacCulloch opens the interview on. The historian is in the sanity business. The course MacCulloch is hypothetically teaching opens with this game because the game installs the foundational discipline that the sanity-defense depends on: the capacity to distinguish what can be claimed historically from what merely sounds historical.

This matters because propaganda operates by producing claims that sound historical without being so. The Tudor carrot idiom is a benign example of the move; the great racial origin of the nation, the inherent unfitness of this people for self-government, the obvious moral failures of the opposing political tradition — these are the malign versions of the same move. Each is plausibility generated without evidence. The student who has fallen for "carrot" has had the foundational training to recognize the malign versions when they appear in less obvious dress.

"My course this term is going to keep you sane," MacCulloch says is what he'd tell his hypothetical students at the start.1 The claim is not metaphorical. The discipline the carrot game installs is structurally identical to the discipline that prevents propaganda capture. The skill of recognizing plausibility-without-evidence in your own thinking is the same skill required to recognize it in someone else's. Train the skill on Tudor carrots, and you've installed it for everything else.

Implementation: How to Run the Game

The protocol is portable to other fields and other levels of education:

Identify the core discipline of your field. What is the specific skill that distinguishes practitioners from clever amateurs? For history, it's the evidential check on plausible interpretations. For other fields, it will be different — but every field has it.

Design questions that span the difficulty range. Some easy ones (to establish what the discipline looks like operating routinely). Some moderately hard ones (to introduce the discipline's nuances). And — crucially — at least one trap question that catches the clever failure mode specifically.

The trap question must produce active construction. Not a question students answer by recall, but one they answer by building an interpretation. The construction is the diagnostic move; the reveal works only if the students have committed to something they invented.

The reveal must be lighthearted but precise. "Clever one, but wrong" — not punishing, not lecturing, but precise about what failed. The students need to see their own construction clearly and understand specifically why it doesn't pass the discipline's test.

The game must end in the discipline's deeper claim. MacCulloch's game ends in sanity. Other fields will have other deeper claims. Whatever the claim is, the pedagogical sequence has to link the discipline (the boring, technical skill) to the claim (why the discipline matters). Without the link, the discipline reads as arbitrary; with the link, students can see what the work is for.

Evidence / Tensions / Open Questions

The pedagogy has the strongest possible evidence: it has worked, repeatedly, with multiple cohorts of students at MacCulloch's college. The carrot game catches the clever students reliably, and the catch produces the recognition MacCulloch is looking for. The same kinds of games show up in other disciplines (philosophy seminars often run similar traps on undergraduate epistemology students) with similar effectiveness.

Tension: the pedagogy can feel like a gotcha. The student who falls for "carrot" experiences a moment of social embarrassment, and a less skillful instructor could turn the moment into shame rather than insight. MacCulloch's framing ("well done... clever one, but wrong") keeps the recognition affectionate, but the technique requires the instructor's care.

A second tension: the trap rewards students who are willing to commit publicly to constructions they're uncertain about. Students who refuse to commit — who say "I don't know" or "I don't think so" — don't fall for the trap, but they also don't learn the lesson. The pedagogy is calibrated for students who will risk being wrong. Students who won't risk are unreached by it. That's the population the pedagogy doesn't help.

A third tension lives in the relationship between play and serious stakes. The game works because the stakes are low enough to permit risk. But the lesson is about high-stakes discipline (the sanity-defense). The translation from low-stakes play to high-stakes practice is not automatic. MacCulloch trusts that the recognition the game installs will transfer; whether it actually transfers in all cases is empirically uncertain.

Open questions:

  • What's the optimal age range for this pedagogy? MacCulloch mentions sixth-formers (~17-18) and occasional undergraduates. Does it work at younger ages? At older ages? Is there a developmental window?
  • The carrot specifically depends on the students wanting to do well — the social desire to play the game competently is what makes them construct the rescue. For students less invested in school performance, would the trap still work?
  • Can the pedagogy be deployed non-interactively — in a book or essay rather than a live classroom? Or does the live commitment moment (the student saying "yes, it must be a Tudor idiom") require the interactive setting?

Author Tensions & Convergences

Read Socrates with the carrot game in mind and the lineage clicks. A student walks in confident. Socrates asks a question. The student gives an answer that feels obvious. Then comes the follow-up question, then another, and somewhere in the sequence the student's confident answer collapses — not because Socrates told her she was wrong, but because the follow-ups let her watch her own answer fail. MacCulloch's twenty-question game is the historiographic version. The student walks in confident about what counts as a historical statement. By question twenty she has constructed the Tudor-carrot rescue and watched it fail. The same pedagogical structure: induced commitment, then disclosed inadequacy, then the recognition. Socrates targets unexamined assumptions; MacCulloch targets unfounded plausibility-construction. Domain-specific applications of the same older technique.

Try to solve a Zen koan and a different version of the same machinery operates. The koan is structured so that ordinary reasoning cannot reach it. You sit with it for weeks. Your mind keeps trying to construct an answer; each attempt fails. At some point the trying itself becomes the thing being seen. The koan worked because the failure happened in your own thinking, not because someone told you about failure. MacCulloch's carrot does the same machinery on smaller stakes and shorter timescale. Both pedagogies trust that real learning sometimes requires the experience of your own apparatus failing — the experience can't be transmitted as a lesson; it has to happen in you.

Pink's promise principle frames every writing-reader interaction as a contract. Apply this to the carrot game and a hidden promise-structure appears. The teacher promises a game — that's the entertainment-promise the students sign up for. What the teacher delivers is the entertainment plus an induced-failure that installs the discipline. Over-delivery, in a sense — the students got more than they bargained for. The principle generalizes. Borges does this in fiction: he promises you a story and delivers an epistemic puzzle that changes how you read everything after. Same structure as MacCulloch's classroom, written into the text instead of run live.

Then walk through Vygotsky and the play-pedagogy tradition. Vygotsky's framework says learning happens most efficiently inside self-directed exploration with appropriate scaffolding. The carrot game shares the play frame but adds something Vygotsky's open exploration doesn't have: a trap. Open-ended exploration lets students discover whatever's interesting. The carrot game lets them discover something specific the teacher has set up. Both work; they work differently. Open exploration is excellent when you don't know what the student needs to encounter. Trap-structured play is excellent when there's a specific failure mode you want the student to experience. MacCulloch isn't choosing trap over exploration; he's deploying the right tool for the specific lesson historians have to install.

The pedagogy connects to traditional teaching methods across cultures, to the philosophy of education, and to certain therapeutic practices that use induced-failure for insight.

  • Eastern Spirituality: Koan Practice (or analogous page on Zen pedagogy) — koan work uses questions that defeat ordinary reasoning to produce the breakthrough experience. The handshake produces the recognition that MacCulloch's pedagogy is a folk version of a much older contemplative technique: teaching through inducing the failure of normal cognitive operation. The split is in the failure target: koans target dualistic conceptual thinking; the carrot game targets unfounded interpretive plausibility-construction. The Sharpest Implication

The carrot game implies something uncomfortable about your own intelligence. Cleverness is not the same as evidence-based knowing, and cleverness sometimes gets in the way. Smart people are particularly vulnerable to constructing plausible explanations for things they cannot actually verify. The capacity that lets them succeed at most cognitive tasks (rapid pattern-matching, fluent interpretation, confident construction of frameworks) becomes a liability in domains that require evidential discipline. If MacCulloch is right, most of what passes for sophisticated thinking is Tudor-carrot construction: smart people building plausible interpretations of inadequately-supported claims and feeling clever about it. The third-wire reading is that you have probably constructed Tudor-carrots in your own thinking this week — confident interpretations of someone's motives, of historical patterns, of social trends — and you have not noticed because no one was there to say "clever one, but wrong." The discipline the carrot game installs is the discipline of checking your own cleverness against evidence, and most people, including most smart people, are not running that discipline most of the time.

  • What's the carrot question for the field you most identify with? What's the trap that catches clever practitioners specifically — the construction that smart people in your field reliably build that has no evidential ground? Identifying it would tell you something important about your field's failure mode.
  • The pedagogy requires the student to commit publicly to a construction. In your own thinking, do you commit to constructions clearly enough that you can be wrong about them, or do you keep them vague enough that you can always claim you didn't really mean it? Vague non-commitment is the avoidance move; the carrot game requires the willingness to be wrong.
