The book makes a precise diagnostic claim about why some operators close deals that other operators with the same factual information don't: "Every salesperson has heard the facts about this prospect's needs. However, the feelings and emotions about this prospect's needs have only been heard by you, the New Model Salesperson."1 The fact-information is symmetric across the operator-population; the feeling-information is asymmetric and that asymmetry is the close-rate variable.
The principle: every operator working the same prospect-pool gets approximately the same factual data from prospects. The prospect tells each operator what they have, how long they've had it, what they need. The facts are public goods within the operator-pool.
The feelings — what those facts feel like, what the emotional stakes are, what frustration or fear or hope is driving the situation — those don't get surfaced for every operator. They get surfaced only for operators who ask the kind of questions that produce emotional articulation. Most operators don't ask those questions, so most operators never get the feelings.
The book frames the diagnostic2: "Do your prospects make buying decisions based on logic (facts) or emotions (feelings)? We know they base them on emotion and will justify with logic." If decisions are made on the feeling-channel and feelings are asymmetrically distributed across operators, then operators who collect feelings have an information advantage no amount of fact-knowledge can compensate for.
The mechanism connects to Buyer's EQ and Problem Awareness Stage 3. Operators who ask Problem Awareness + Probing + Clarifying + Consequence questions specifically engineered to surface emotional content get the feelings. Operators who run logical-needs-extraction (SPIN-style) stop at facts. Same prospect, different operator-question-craft, different information.
The asymmetry is also durable. Feelings articulated by the prospect to one operator are encoded in that prospect's memory as content shared with that operator. The prospect may give the facts again to a competitor but won't easily re-articulate the feelings — the emotional surface was vulnerable when first revealed; the prospect closes it after the disclosure. Operators who surface feelings first get them; operators who arrive later get only facts.

The conference-sales dialogue from earlier in the book (Problem Awareness Stage 3 page references it). Multiple resort sales-operators contacted the same prospect about hosting a 500-person convention. Each got the facts: check-in timing issues, dinner-service complaints, capacity requirements. The facts were available to every operator who asked.
Only the NEPQ-trained operator asked probing questions that surfaced the boss-jumping-on-the-prospect story, the "I thought I might lose my job" detail, the "devastated, to say the least" emotional content, the "I have a family to take care of" stakes. Those feelings were available only because that operator's questions invited them. The other operators got the facts; only the NEPQ operator got the feelings. The deal closed because the feelings were available for the presentation to address.
You audit two recent deals — one closed, one stalled. For each, list the facts you collected and the feelings you collected. Most operators discover the closed deal had 5-10 feeling-data-points and the stalled deal had 0-2. The asymmetry within your own pipeline confirms the principle.
You commit to one discipline: before any presentation, you must be able to articulate at least three emotional content-points the prospect surfaced. If you can't, the engagement stage was incomplete and you go back to ask one more clarifying or consequence question before transitioning.
The cognitive-science foundation is robust — dual-process theory (Kahneman System 1/System 2), affect-heuristic (Slovic), somatic-marker hypothesis (Damasio) all converge on the claim that emotional processing drives decisions and logical processing justifies them post-hoc. The 85/15 split attributed to Carnegie is folkloric and likely overstated, but the directional claim holds across the empirical literature.
A live tension: the asymmetry-of-emotional-information across operators isn't directly studied. The book asserts that "every operator gets the facts, only NEPQ operators get the feelings" but the comparison requires operators who could plausibly surface feelings but didn't, and the empirical case for that population is anecdotal.
Open question: in B2B contexts where multiple stakeholders are involved, whose feelings matter? The decision-maker's? The user's? The procurement officer's? Different stakeholders have different emotional drivers; the methodology doesn't address how to triage feelings-collection across a stakeholder set.
