Picture two places that don't want you inside. The first is a squad of soldiers who stopped for the night in open country. They've dug shallow holes, strung wire in a rough ring, set tin cans on the trip lines, posted a couple of men to walk the edge, and maybe loosed a dog. None of it is permanent. By morning it will be gone. The second place is a prison. Concrete wall, chain-link with sensors woven through it, cameras on poles, a guard in a booth watching a bank of monitors. It has stood for thirty years and will stand for thirty more.

Common sense says the prison is harder to break into. It has more stuff — more steel, more electronics, more money sunk into keeping people out. Haha Lung says common sense is exactly backward.1 The squad in the field is the harder target. The men in those foxholes are awake in a way the prison guard never is, because the men in the foxholes know that if the perimeter fails tonight, they die in their sleep. The prison guard knows that if the perimeter fails, a sensor beeps and somebody else handles it. One wall is watching you. The other wall is sleeping, and trusting its machines to do the watching for it.

That is the whole doctrine in a sentence: the more a perimeter leans on technology, the less the humans behind it actually pay attention.2 Read which kind of wall you're facing first — because it tells you whether your real enemy tonight is the man or the machine.

What This Actually Is

A perimeter is the line a place draws to say not past here. Haha Lung's Knights of Darkness splits every perimeter on earth into two families.1

A flexible perimeter is temporary — set up by people who are passing through and will be gone by morning. A moving troop stops, and overnight it throws up a ring around itself: foxholes, a trench, coils of barbed wire, a screen of sentries who either stand fixed posts or walk patrol, sometimes both, sometimes with dogs.3 In wartime these RON (remain-overnight) rings get strung with cheap, fast alert devices — trip wires running to noise-making tin cans, to flares that light the sky, to claymore antipersonnel mines that simply kill whatever crosses them.4 The defining trait is impermanence, and the second defining trait follows from the first: the people who built it are in it. Their lives are inside the ring.

A fixed perimeter is permanent — bolted in place and meant to stay. It runs from a secured office building with no fence at all, up through penal and military institutions with fences, walking patrols, and a whole catalog of electronic security devices.5 On paper it has the better defenses: real obstacles, real surveillance, layered hardware. Lung concedes the point — fixed perimeters generally have better physical security in the form of fences and electronics.6

And then he flips it. The fixed perimeter is generally less secure in terms of personnel. The hardware bought the place better walls and worse watchmen.

Here is the gear that drives the whole machine: there is an inverse relationship between the amount of high-tech security equipment on a perimeter and the alertness of the guards behind it.2 Crank one up and the other drops. More sensors, sleepier men. It runs in a straight line, and it runs in the direction nobody buying the sensors wants to believe.

The mechanism is almost embarrassingly human. The more you depend on your high-tech equipment, the less you trust and depend on your own senses.2 A guard with a wall of monitors learns, shift after shift, that the monitors do the seeing. The fixed-perimeter guard grows bored, bogged down in the monotony of his nightly routine — same walk, same gate, same nothing, a thousand nights running, and the technology has quietly told him that nothing is exactly what he's supposed to expect.7

The flexible-perimeter sentry is the opposite animal. He's more alert, because he is guarding his own life and the lives of the comrades bivouacked behind him.7 No machine stands between his senses and the dark. The trip wire and the claymore aren't watching for him — they're just teeth that bite if something gets that close. The actual watching is still his job, and he knows the cost of doing it badly is his throat. Fear does what no camera can: it keeps a man's senses switched on through a long boring night.

So the two perimeters fail in opposite places. To beat the fixed perimeter you mostly circumvent electronics — the men are the soft part.8 To beat the flexible perimeter you need the utmost patience and stealth, sneaking past or silently removing human (and sometimes canine) sentries, because they are the hard part and there's not much electronics to fool.8 Same goal, two completely different jobs, decided entirely by which kind of wall it is.

Lung calls that exact side an infiltrator's dream.12 A flexible perimeter set with its "six" — its rear — to a canyon wall or a body of water lets the infiltrator come from the one direction the defenders have written off. Scuba gear, closed-circuit if possible so no bubbles rise, and a man swims up to the camp from the lake the defenders trusted.12 Or a rope, and a man rappels down the canyon wall the defenders thought no one could climb. The "free" side wasn't free. It was simply the side where no sentry was posted and no eyes were turned, because the terrain had been quietly promised to do a sentry's job.

Look at what just happened: the water and the cliff are fixed features that crept into a flexible perimeter, and they imported the fixed perimeter's exact disease. The lake is a sensor that never blinks, so the men stopped watching the lake — same surrender of the senses as the prison guard makes to his cameras, except here the camp made it to a feature of the landscape. The defenders didn't lower their alertness because they got lazy. They lowered it because they trusted something other than themselves to keep that side shut. That is the inverse-alertness law wearing a costume, and it is why Lung reserves foolishly for it. The whole edge of the flexible perimeter — that the men are awake because their lives depend on it — evaporates the moment they let one side be guarded by something that isn't afraid to die.

You think, for a second, about the other kind of night — the field camp two valleys over, the one you didn't try. No fence there. Just holes in the dirt and men in them who flinch at a snapped twig because the twig might be the last thing they hear. No path to read, because there's no machine telling them where not to look. To take that ring you'd have crawled for three hours to cross thirty feet, breathing into the dirt, easing each wire aside, maybe putting a hand over a dog's muzzle. Patience and stealth, the whole budget spent on outlasting awake men. You're glad, lying here, that tonight's wall is the sleeping kind — and you fix your route on the corner the cameras taught the guard to ignore.

The Perimeter-Reading Failure (Diagnostic Signs)

The first failure is mistaking the brochure for the threat. You count the cameras, you count the strands of wire, you tally the hardware, and you grade the perimeter on its budget. You've just read the wall the way the people who paid for it want it read — by its receipts. The receipts measure the obstacles, not the alertness, and the alertness is the part that varies inversely with the receipts. The more impressed you are by the gear, the worse you're reading the place.

The second failure is treating every wall as the same wall. You bring the patient crawl-and-clip technique to a fixed perimeter and waste three hours defeating a fence that a man simply isn't watching. A real open question sits inside the claim. Lung writes as though the relationship is purely psychological — men stop trusting their senses when machines are present.2 But a fixed perimeter's boredom may come as much from permanence (the same post a thousand nights) as from technology (the camera doing the seeing). His own framing fuses the two — fixed perimeters are both permanent and electronic — so the doctrine can't fully separate which variable kills the alertness. A heavily-electronic but newly-established post, or an ancient fixed post with no electronics at all, would test it. Lung doesn't run that test.

The deeper tension is the arms-race logic the law implies and never states: every dollar of security hardware buys a measure of obstacle and spends a measure of vigilance. If true, a perimeter can over-invest in technology and come out less secure — a conclusion the entire security-hardware industry exists to deny. Lung leaves that grenade on the table without pulling the pin.
