That's Donald Hebb's sensory-deprivation experiment, and it revealed something the intelligence agencies found electrifying: you don't need to torture a mind to break it down. You just have to take away its inputs. Deprived of stimulation, the healthy student became anxious, couldn't think straight, hallucinated, and — most important to the watchers from the CIA — grew strikingly suggestible. Hebb was doing careful science, and he let his subjects leave whenever they wanted.
