Alexander knew Darius would fragment his forces before Gaugamela. That knowledge enabled precision. He positioned for the attack that would work against a fragmented army, and the fragmentation happened exactly as he predicted. But knowledge creates a moral problem that operates below conscious awareness. Once you know the other side will lose, a strange permission enters your consciousness: the permission to do things you wouldn't do if the outcome were uncertain. If you're not sure you'll win, you negotiate carefully. If you know you'll win, you can afford to be ruthless. Information advantage becomes epistemic privilege: the privilege of knowing enough to be certain, and the certainty generates permission.
This is the hidden cost of information asymmetry: it doesn't just enable better decisions. It enables moral disengagement. The person with superior information can construct a narrative of inevitability—the opposition had to lose, so my actions were necessary, not chosen. Moral disengagement theory (Bandura) describes how people exempt themselves from ethical standards they normally hold themselves to.2 One mechanism of disengagement is construing harmful actions as serving worthy purposes. If the outcome is inevitable, my harsh actions are not cruel—they're efficient. If the opposition cannot win, my ruthlessness is not immoral—it's honest about reality.

When information is asymmetric, the person with more information is always tempted to believe their understanding is also more correct. The antidote is transparency.
Information asymmetry is the foundation of successful strategy. The side with better intelligence defeats the side with worse intelligence, all other things equal.3 This is why reconnaissance is military doctrine, why spying is rational, why intelligence agencies exist. Information advantage is strategically decisive.
But information asymmetry enables something beyond strategy: it enables control that appears voluntary. If you know what the opposition values and what they'll move toward, you can shape their choices by controlling their information. You don't have to force them to move in a direction—you can arrange their information so that moving in that direction seems like their own choice.

Intervention: Make constraints visible. Share the information asymmetry. Let people know what you know about the situation, not just what you want them to do. The more symmetric the information, the more genuine the consent. Information asymmetry erodes genuine agreement.
Alexander's intelligence advantage enabled rapid conquest. But the invisibility of that advantage meant that conquered peoples didn't understand how they'd lost. Conquest that comes through overwhelming force is visible—you can see the army that defeated you. Empires built on information control and apparent consent often have longer-lasting conquest. The invisibility of the control mechanism makes it harder to resist. You can't rebel against something you don't perceive as coercion.
Alexander's intelligence advantage made his conquest rapid but also invisible. Darius experienced his defeats not as losses to a superior general but as strategic failures on his own part. This affected succession and governance: Darius had to explain his defeats to his generals and subordinates, and the explanation was "I made mistakes," which undermines authority. Alexander's opponents, by contrast, could blame external factors (Alexander's surprise tactics, intelligence advantage) without losing internal credibility.
Diagnostic: Is your power visible or invisible? Can people see how you're influencing outcomes, or is the mechanism hidden? Does your influence operate through acknowledged authority or through information they don't have?
Intervention: Make your power visible. Acknowledge when you're using information advantages. Be transparent about how you're influencing situations. Visible power is more ethical than invisible power, even when the invisible power is more effective.
The Sharpest Implication: Information asymmetry operates as epistemic privilege that enables moral disengagement. The person with superior information believes they have superior moral clarity. But moral clarity doesn't flow from better information—it flows from wrestling with the limits of your knowledge and the humanity of those affected by your decisions. Information advantage can actually reduce moral clarity by creating the illusion of certainty.
