Alexander Pope's line: To err is human; to forgive divine.1

The two halves are perfectly balanced. To err / to forgive — both infinitive verb-phrases. Is human / divine — implicit is in the second half, but the structure mirrors. Two grammatical clauses of the same shape, side by side, balanced like a scale.

This is isocolon. The Greek name compresses iso- (equal) and -colon (member or clause): equal members. Two phrases that match each other structurally even if not in length. The sentence is built on a balance the reader's ear hears as satisfying.

Forsyth: That's a beautiful example of isocolon, which is just when you have two completely a sentence in two halves and it's completely balanced. To err is human, to forgive divine. And it's a lovely antithesis there as well... Same as Roses are red, Violets are blue.1

What Isocolon Does

The cognitive effect: balance. The audience hears two halves that match and experiences the line as finished, complete, structurally sound. The balance feels like the line is making a single coherent claim because the form is single and coherent.

Often isocolon is paired with antithesis (as in Pope: human / divine; as in chiasmus from the same family). The balanced form makes the antithesis sharper because the contrast is held by parallel structure rather than by argument. Human contrasts with divine not because the writer argues a contrast but because the form holds them in matching positions.

  • Doggerel: Roses are red, violets are blue — children's verse but structurally a clean isocolon. The two halves match.
  • Proverbial: Easy come, easy go. Two-word isocolon with each side mirroring.
  • Liturgical: Where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. (St. Francis prayer). Multiple isocola in series.

The technique scales from two-word folk-sayings to multi-clause liturgical formulas. Its versatility is part of why it survives across genres.

When Tennyson Doesn't Quite Use Isocolon

Forsyth offers a case where the line looks like isocolon but isn't quite — Tennyson's to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Four phrases. Three of them (to strive, to seek, to find) are short balanced infinitives. The fourth (and not to yield) is structurally different (it's negated and conjuncted-in). Forsyth says: it's not a particular rhetorical trope being used there but it's a great one, there's a long series of verbs really.1

The Tennyson line is almost isocolon and is great anyway. This is a useful negative case. Isocolon's balance is one source of force but not the only one. A great line can use other forces (the verb-stacking; the moral conviction; the rhythm) without needing strict structural balance. The figures are tools, not requirements.

Pairing With Antithesis

The strongest isocolons typically also carry antithesis — the balanced form holds an actual contrast. Human / divine. Easy come / easy go. Man proposes / God disposes. The balance carries the contrast and the contrast earns the balance.

Pure isocolon without antithesis (to err is human, to think is human) reads as restatement rather than insight. The balance asks for a contrast to hold. When the contrast isn't there, the form feels under-deployed.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Isocolon and chiasmus both rely on balanced sentence structure. Isocolon balances two halves of the same shape; chiasmus balances two halves in inverted shape (X structure). Both produce felt-rightness through structural symmetry. The split: isocolon is forward-balance; chiasmus is reverse-balance.

Isocolon converges with tricolon on the principle that the brain processes balanced enumerations as units. Tricolon scales the principle to three; isocolon does two. Both exploit the cognitive preference for small balanced groupings.

The two halves are designed to match prosodically and often semantically. The entire Bhagavad Gītā is composed in śloka — thousands of balanced couplets. The structural identity: isocolon at sentence-level and śloka at verse-level operate on the same principle of balanced halves producing satisfying form. The insight neither domain generates alone: Sanskrit philosophical literature operates almost entirely in isocolon-equivalent verse architecture, and the structural force the Bhagavad Gītā carries across millennia is partially the force of sustained isocolon. Writers who learn from Sanskrit prosody have a deeper sense of how isocolon can be sustained across long works.

A third connection worth marking: isocolon has structural similarity to certain Sanskrit alaṃkāras — the Indian rhetorical taxonomy includes named figures for balanced-clause architecture.

The Sharpest Implication

If isocolon's balanced halves produce felt-correctness through symmetry-preference, then writers who produce unbalanced sentence-architecture by default are leaving cognitive grip on the table whenever the underlying content actually has a binary or antithetical shape. The uncomfortable implication: many writers under-use isocolon because the form feels too neat or too aphoristic — but the form's neatness is precisely what makes it land. When you actually do have a two-part claim, isocolon-shape will deliver it more durably than any non-balanced version. The discipline is to recognize when the content wants the form, and to give it the form when it does.
