A dibia at work in a healing-protocol session. Eight days into the patient's full treatment-arc. The first three steps of the seven-step protocol have been completed: Raia (the opening), Ani (identification of the spirit-party responsible for the affliction), Guata (examination of the specific terms of the malformed-relationship). Now the dibia is constructing something.
The object on the floor between them is taking shape. Specific materials — particular clay, particular fibers, particular small objects. The construction takes time; the dibia is operating in ritual-state throughout; her hands move with knowledge the patient does not have. The object is not decorative; it is being assembled to specific cosmological-specifications. By the end of the construction-period, what sits between them is an effigy — a physical object that represents the affliction-spirit-party they have been working with for the past week. The next move in the protocol is the lock.
This is the move Derick's S2 articulates at lines 225-end as Machino — the lock step in the seven-step healing protocol (see Seven-Step Igbo Healing Protocol).1 The lock-ritual performs terms-inscription — the specific new terms of the renegotiated-relationship are inscribed into the effigy. The spirit-party will inhabit this effigy; will receive these specific offerings; will honor these specific boundaries. The cosmological-contract is being made physical, locked into a specific material substrate.
Then, later in the protocol (Step 7, Noala), the effigy is released — typically into Ajo Ohia, the evil forest (see Ajo Ohia). The spirit-party can inhabit the renegotiated-relationship without continuing to express through the patient's body or life-pattern. The release closes the renegotiation; the effigy carries the new-relationship-terms into its specific cosmological-location. The patient returns home with the relationship now operating elsewhere.
This is what concrete relational-renegotiation looks like in operational form. The renegotiation-doctrine (see Ritual as Relationship Renegotiation) is operatively-performed through the lock-and-release: the new terms are not just verbalized but are inscribed into a material-cosmological substrate that carries the terms into ongoing operation. The matter-register-inscription is what gives the renegotiation durability that verbal-only renegotiation lacks.1
The lock-and-release has three component-mechanisms.
Effigy-construction as cosmological-contract-inscription. The effigy is not symbolic in a Western-decorative sense. It is the material-cosmological-substrate of the renegotiated-relationship. The dibia constructs it with specific attention to which spirit-party is being addressed, what materials correspond to that spirit-party, what specific terms are being locked in. The construction-process is part of the ritual; the resulting object carries the cosmological-content the construction-process placed in it. A non-dibia-constructed object would not work; the cosmological-content has to be placed-during-construction by someone whose medium-function-capacity is operative.
The lock as terms-inscription. The lock-ritual specifies the new terms operatively. The spirit-party will inhabit this effigy (not the patient's body or life-pattern). The spirit-party will receive specific offerings at specific frequencies (which the family or community is committed to maintaining). The spirit-party will honor specific boundaries (will not return to the patient under specified conditions). The terms are spoken; the terms are gestured; the terms are embodied in the effigy's specific configuration. The lock-moment is when the terms become operative; the spirit-party has now an inscribed-relationship-architecture rather than the prior-malformed-architecture.
The release as relationship-into-operation. The Noala step releases the effigy into Ajo Ohia (or other appropriate cosmological-location). The spirit-party, in its newly-locked-relationship-terms, now operates from the effigy's location. The patient's body and life-pattern are no longer the operative-location of the relationship; the effigy is. The patient is released into ordinary-life with the relationship-now-operating elsewhere. The release is not abandonment; it is position-shifting — the relationship continues, but at a new cosmological-location with new operative-terms.1
A specific moment in a treatment-arc. The dibia and the patient have been working for over a week. The fever-spirit identified in Step 2 has been the focus of their work. The Guata-step has surfaced the specific terms of the malformed-relationship — what the spirit has been taking; what the patient has owed; what boundaries had been violated. Now the effigy is constructed.
The dibia speaks the lock-terms aloud. The fever-spirit is addressed by name. Spirit who has been expressing-yourself through this body, you will now reside here, in this effigy. You will receive offerings of these specific substances at these specific intervals. The patient's body is no longer your dwelling-place; you will not return to it under the terms we have established. The community will maintain the offerings; you will receive what you require; the relationship continues, but from this new position.
The patient is present throughout. The patient sometimes-affirms-verbally; sometimes-performs specific gestures; sometimes-simply-witnesses. The lock requires the patient's-participation; the cosmological-contract has the patient as one party. The patient cannot delegate this; the lock has to be witnessed-and-participated-in by the party whose relationship is being renegotiated.
By the end of the lock-ritual, the effigy is operative. The cosmological-content the dibia has been working with for over a week now has-its-new-location. The patient's body settles in a way it had not been settling. The fever-pattern, which had been recurring on a specific cycle, begins to break. Over the next days, the cycle does not return on the expected schedule.
The Noala step comes several days later. The dibia carries the effigy to Ajo Ohia (in contemporary cases, to whatever appropriate-cosmological-quarantine location is operative). The effigy is left there. The spirit-party now operates from that location, in the renegotiated-relationship-terms. The family will maintain the offerings; the boundary will be honored; the relationship will continue but at a new cosmological-position. The patient returns home with the relationship operating elsewhere.
This is what the lock-and-release looks like operationally inside a complete treatment-arc. The matter-register-inscription is what produced the durability; the verbal-only renegotiation would have addressed only the spirit-register and would have been correspondingly-less-durable.1
The lock-and-release page does specific work for the vault's broader healing-and-renegotiation material.
It grounds Seven-Step Igbo Healing Protocol — Steps 4 (Machino, the lock) and 7 (Noala, the release) of the protocol elaborated specifically. The protocol as a whole depends on the lock-and-release operating correctly; without these specific steps, the protocol does not close.
It grounds Symbolic Release and Tying Rituals — the broader tying-releasing apparatus that the lock-and-release exemplifies in its specific form.
It grounds Ritual as Relationship Renegotiation — the doctrine the lock-and-release operationalizes through the matter-register-inscription mechanism.
It grounds Ajo Ohia — the receiving-location for released-effigies. Ajo Ohia's cosmological-function depends on the lock-and-release feeding the released-content to it.
It grounds Mmuo and Madu — the substance-monism that makes matter-register-inscription operative. Without substance-monism, the effigy-construction would not work; the substance-continuity is what makes the material-inscription propagate into spirit-register-effects.
The lock-and-release concept opens cross-tradition handshakes to other material-inscription-renegotiation traditions: contemporary therapeutic-effigy practice (dolls used in specific psychotherapeutic approaches; the externalization-of-symptom in narrative therapy; the somatic-experiencing externalization-of-trauma-content); medieval European cunning-folk traditions that used material-inscription; specific Indigenous-tradition material-renegotiation practices.
A particular failure-mode in contemporary contexts deserves naming because it is the most common pattern when practitioners attempt cross-tradition adaptation of the framework without the full material-inscription protocol.
The signature: verbal-only renegotiation. The practitioner performs the conversation-component of the renegotiation but skips the material-inscription. The new terms are spoken; the new terms are not inscribed. The renegotiation does not lock with the durability the material-inscription would have produced. The patient's symptoms recur; the relational-tension reasserts; the new terms were not durably-locked because the material-register inscription was absent.
You can recognize the failure-mode by these signs. The renegotiation has been verbalized — the parties have spoken the new terms; the conversation has happened; everyone agrees on the new arrangement. There is no material-substrate that carries the new terms — no shared object, no written agreement, no specific ritual-physical-element that the renegotiation has been inscribed into. Over time, the new terms erode. The pattern that was supposed to have been renegotiated reasserts. The parties are puzzled because they remember-the-renegotiation but cannot maintain it.
The Igbo discipline gives the diagnostic. Material-register-inscription is part of the renegotiation, not a decorative-supplement. The lock requires both registers — verbal-spirit-register articulation and material-matter-register inscription. Renegotiations that operate only one register are correspondingly-less-durable; renegotiations that operate both registers have substance-monism on their side.
The implementation, for non-dibia contexts: identify what material-register-inscription is appropriate to the specific renegotiation. A shared-object between parties whose relationship is being renegotiated; a written-agreement that has been signed-and-witnessed; a specific-ritual-element that physically-marks the new arrangement. The form matters less than the substance-of-material-register-inclusion. The principle is consistent: verbal-only renegotiation is incomplete-renegotiation.
The lock-and-release ritual is articulated at S2 lines 225-end.1 The mainstream Africanist scholarship on Igbo dibia-praxis recognizes the effigy-construction tradition; Iroegbu's academic-literature documents the procedure.
Open question: how does the lock-and-release tradition handle cases where appropriate-physical-locations (Ajo Ohia, specific cosmological-spots) are not accessible (diaspora contexts; urbanized-Nigerian contexts where traditional-locations have been built-over)? The adaptation-strategies are real but not extensively documented.
Open question: what specific materials and construction-protocols are operative for which spirit-party-types? The dibia-tradition has tradition-internal-knowledge about which materials work for which kinds of effigies; this knowledge is not extensively-academic-documented.
Open question: how does the lock-and-release interact with biomedical-care in cases where both are operating? Practitioner-tradition handles this case-by-case; framework-articulation does not give general-protocol for the integration.
Reading Derick alongside Michael White's narrative-therapy framework surfaces a productive convergence with important methodological-difference. White's framework involves externalizing the problem — separating the problem from the person; treating the problem as a discrete entity with which the person is in relationship. The structural-parallel to the effigy-construction is direct. Both traditions externalize the affliction; both renegotiate the relationship with the externalized-entity. What White's framework adds to the Igbo articulation: a clinical-individual practice-context for externalization that is portable to contemporary therapeutic work. What the Igbo articulation adds to White's framework: the cosmological-substantive-grounding for externalization (the affliction is a spirit-party with operative-reality, not just a useful conceptual-frame for therapeutic engagement) and the material-inscription-step that White's framework typically does not include. Reading them together produces an externalization-with-material-inscription practice that is more substantive than either alone.
Reading the lock-and-release alongside Western contract-law surfaces a different productive convergence. Western contract-law has been operating the material-inscription-of-agreements principle in commercial-and-legal contexts for centuries. The structural-parallel to the cosmological-contract-effigy is real. The insight neither alone produces: the principle that durable-agreements require material-substrate-inscription is operative across both commercial and cosmological-relational domains; the principle is more-fundamental than its domain-specific-applications. Reading them together: contract-law reveals the broader-applicability of the material-inscription principle (it operates across many kinds of agreements); the Igbo articulation reveals the cosmologically-grounded version of what contract-law has been operating without cosmological-articulation.
The lock-and-release page handshakes outward in operationally-specific ways. Each handshake produces an insight neither domain alone generates.
Psychology: Externalization — Narrative Therapy White — Michael White's narrative-therapy framework involves externalizing the problem (separating the problem from the person; treating the problem as a discrete entity with which the person is in relationship). The structural parallel to the effigy-construction is direct. The insight neither alone produces: contemporary clinical-psychology has been rebuilding the externalization-and-renegotiation framework the Igbo lock-and-release has been operating for centuries. Both traditions externalize the affliction; both renegotiate. The Igbo tradition adds the material-inscription step that White's framework typically does not include; integrating the material-inscription into narrative-therapy work could substantially-strengthen the durability of the therapeutic-renegotiations. Specifically: narrative-therapists could include material-inscription elements (shared-object, written-agreement, specific-ritual-marker) that operate the material-register-engagement the Igbo articulation makes explicit.
Behavioral mechanics: Contract Law and Material Inscription — Western contract-law has been operating the material-inscription-of-agreements principle in commercial-and-legal contexts for centuries. The structural parallel to the cosmological-contract-effigy is real. The insight neither alone produces: the material-inscription principle is operative across multiple-domain types — commercial-and-legal agreements; cosmological-relational renegotiations; specific therapeutic interventions. The principle is general — durable agreements across many domain-types require material-register-inscription rather than verbal-only articulation. Both domains demonstrate the principle in tradition-specific application. Reading them together establishes the principle as cross-domain operative-feature rather than tradition-idiosyncratic mechanism.
Behavioral mechanics: Commitment Devices — Thaler and Sunstein — behavioral-economics research on commitment-devices documents that pre-committing through material-substrate (specific contracts; specific financial-stakes; specific public-pledges) produces substantially-different behavioral-outcomes than verbal-commitment-alone. The structural-parallel to the lock-and-release is real. The insight neither alone produces: behavioral-economics has been documenting in empirical form what the Igbo articulation operates cosmologically — that material-register-inscription produces operational-effects that verbal-only commitment does not. The combination: behavioral-economics provides empirically-grounded operational-validation; the Igbo articulation provides the cosmological-architectural-grounding that explains why this is so structurally rather than just statistically.
The Sharpest Implication
If material-inscription is structurally-required for durable-renegotiation — if verbal-only renegotiation tends to not-lock — then much of contemporary relational-and-therapeutic work has been operating without the material-inscription that would make the renegotiations durable. The conversation-only approach to relational-renegotiation is one option; the material-inscription-included approach is structurally-different and may be substantially more-durable. The Igbo framework gives a structured-articulation of what most-contemporary-work has been quietly missing; integrating the material-inscription-step could substantially-strengthen therapeutic and relational outcomes.
To take this seriously is to consider that the structural-requirements for substantive-renegotiation are not what contemporary practice assumes them to be. Contemporary practice often centers the verbal-content; the material-inscription-step is treated as decorative; the renegotiations often fail to lock; practitioners conclude that the conditions were too-hard rather than recognizing the structural-incompleteness of the intervention. The Igbo articulation re-centers the material-inscription as load-bearing rather than as optional.
