A seven-step template for building a compelling scene: (1) choose the POV character who has the MOST TO LOSE; (2) define the POV character's intent/goal; (3) give obstacles; (4) set the scene/chapter goal — now reader-facing (what should the reader learn?); (5) emotional architecture — emotions to evoke in BOTH the character AND the reader (Alpay's explicit addition); (6) setting that reflects and interacts with the character's emotion (not stage-dressing); (7) raise tension / cliffhanger (often: the character feels safe but the reader knows a danger set up earlier).
