Picture a marionette. Strings everywhere — arms, legs, the swing of the hips. You could try to grab all of them at once and you'd lose. But press one thumb down on the wooden head and the whole thing goes slack. The arms still twitch a little. They can't do anything. You own the figure because you own the one part that runs all the others.

That is makura osae. The name means "holding down a pillow," and you have to know that a Japanese pillow is small and hard — not a soft thing you sink into.1 So forget gentle. You pin the head as firmly as that hard little pillow holds a skull, and the rest of the body falls under your control with it.

What This Actually Is

You can't lock down a whole body at once. In a clinch you have his arms, his legs, his torso all moving, and you only have two hands.
