Smear Campaign and Coordinated Attack: Reputation Destruction Through Coordination

The Mechanism: Scale Lies Through Multiple Sources

A single person claiming something bad about someone else is easy to dismiss. Multiple people claiming the same thing makes it seem credible, even if all claims are false or exaggerated.1

Coordination of multiple attackers creates the appearance of multiple independent witnesses, when actually all are working together.

How Coordinated Smear Works

Pattern:

  1. Coordinate multiple people to make similar accusations
  2. Accusations don't need to be true; they just need to be repeated
  3. Repetition across multiple sources makes them seem credible
  4. Target spends resources defending against each accusation
  5. Even if some accusations are refuted, others persist

At scale: Fake social media accounts, coordinated review bombing, multiple accusations from "independent" sources that are actually the same person or group.

In institutions: Multiple people make complaints about someone (coordinated or actual), creating impression of pattern even if individual complaints are baseless.

Why It Works

Repetition creates credibility: The same lie repeated by multiple sources feels more true than the same lie repeated once.

Defense is expensive: Defending against one accusation costs energy. Defending against 10 simultaneous accusations exhausts resources.

Doubt lingers: Even if you refute accusations, the fact that multiple accusations existed suggests something might be wrong. The target is now associated with "controversy."

Defense

  • Identify coordination: Are accusations coming from independent sources or are they coordinated?
  • Address patterns, not individuals: Don't defend each accusation individually; address the pattern
  • Recognize asymmetry: Coordinated attacks rely on your defending against each attack. Break the pattern by not treating each as equal credibility
  • Document coordination: If you can show accusations are coordinated rather than independent, credibility collapses
