Motionlessness, Breathing, Withdrawal

How Do You Build a Will?

People talk about willpower as though it were a quantity you have. Some people got more of it, and the rest should try harder — which is a description of the situation rather than a way out of it.

Here it is treated as a thing that gets built, by three exercises in a fixed order, with durations attached. Fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes. And then seconds. The third is measured in seconds because seconds is all anybody manages at first. So the question is worth asking as an engineering question. How do you build a will?

Where They Come From

The attribution is given plainly. Many of these exercises were derived from practices suggested by Franz Bardon, worked in the early 1970s, and later adapted and intensified for easier personal use.1

Adapted and intensified is worth noting as a pair. The changes were not simplifications. They were made after decades of working the originals, rather than on first reading.

And what the three are for is named at the top. They are practised to build a powerful Magical Will.1 Not to relax, not to heal, and not to see anything. To construct a faculty.

Motionlessness

The first is the sitting practice from earlier, now with a different emphasis. Make the body comfortable and try to maintain that position for at least 15 minutes.1

What matters in it is stated as a list of prohibitions, and the list is finer than most people expect. Not to move the eyes, tongue, fingers or any part of the body.1 The eyes and the tongue are the ones nobody thinks of, and they are the hardest.

Two more conditions complete it. Not to allow the mind to wander, but rather to observe yourself as uninvolved as possible. And to persist, even if it gets uncomfortable.1

Note the stance being asked for. Uninvolved is the same word used later for how a working should be performed. You are watching yourself sit, and you are not participating in the discomfort.

Breathing

The second builds on the first rather than replacing it. You are required to stay motionless, and to deliberately slow the breath to a long, deep cycle.1

With a limit that recurs everywhere in this material. Use the entire capacity of the lungs, without any strain or effort.1 Full, and never forced.

Then the attention and the duration. The mind should be completely attentive on the breathing cycle, and kept focused on it for around 30 minutes.1 Which is twice the first exercise, with an added task, so the ladder is steep between the two.

And the instruction is restated in three words, in case any of that sounded complicated. Observe yourself breathing.1 Nothing is being done to the breath except slowing it.

Withdrawal

The third is the one the other two exist to make possible, and that is said outright. The previous exercises will improve health and well-being. They will also prepare one for the practice of withdrawal, which is what they are actually for.1

What withdrawal is: while motionless and breathing deeply, you begin to withdraw the mind from any thoughts which may arise.1 Not to quiet them. To pull back from them.

And the difficulty is stated without any encouragement attached. It requires immense effort and willpower to achieve even seconds of mental silence.1 Seconds. That is the honest scale, and saying so is what stops a beginner concluding they are uniquely bad at this.

Shrink Into Nothing

Then a technique for getting there, offered as an aid rather than as the practice itself. It helps to feel your consciousness contract, virtually into a dot somewhere inside your solar plexus — and then to continue shrinking into a state of nothingness.1

The solar plexus again, which is where the smile goes and where the anxiety is said to live. The dot goes in the animal self's territory. Nothing puts it in the head.

And then the reassurance, which is the most striking sentence in the section. Do not worry that you will die, or disappear into obscurity. You will be perfectly fine.1

That is given before anything happens, which is the same protective move as telling a practitioner in advance that all visions are their own mind. Somebody shrinking their sense of self toward nothing will meet the fear of ending, and being told beforehand that the fear is expected is what keeps it from stopping the practice.

The purpose of the shrinking is modest and clearly stated. It might aid you in achieving the required vigilance without thoughts.1 The dot is scaffolding for a state, and not the state.

And the progression is honest about where it starts. This might last only seconds, but with continued practice the periods of total inner silence will lengthen.1 Seconds, lengthening, over years.

Everything Else Was Doing This Too

The section closes on a remark that quietly reframes the whole syllabus. Most of the practices described in this work develop the Magical Will, and are most valuable.1 It is one sentence, and it is easy to walk past.

Which is worth stopping on, because it changes what everything before it was. Toning the body, the spontaneous song, the sitting, the smiling into the toes. All of it has been will-building, and none of it arrived labelled that way.

So the three exercises here are not the department where will gets made. They are the concentrated version of something the entire practical half has been doing under other names, and a person who has been working the earlier practices has been in training without being told.

Implementation Workflow

You want to build the faculty rather than wait for it to arrive. Three exercises, and the third is the point of the other two.

Start with the two that nobody thinks of. Fifteen minutes without moving is achievable for most people until they try holding the eyes and the tongue still, which is where it becomes a real exercise. Everything else on the prohibition list is easier than those two.

Then use the uninvolved stance rather than endurance. The instruction is to observe yourself as uninvolved as possible, and to persist even if it gets uncomfortable. That is not gritting your teeth. It is watching a body be uncomfortable without joining in, and the difference is the whole exercise.

Then treat the breathing hour as a doubling and expect it to be hard. Thirty minutes, motionless, on a slowed full-capacity breath, with the mind on the cycle. Nothing in that is difficult for a minute, and all of it is difficult for thirty. Which is the point.

And use the dot when the silence will not come. Contract into a point in the solar plexus and keep shrinking. The fear that arrives is expected and named in advance — you will be perfectly fine — and the whole device exists only to produce a few seconds of vigilance without thoughts.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

These are fully specified exercises, with durations, prohibitions and an honest account of what a beginner should expect. Nothing is promised beyond improved health and well-being from the first two. That is a modest claim for two forms of sitting still, and it is the right size.

The attribution is real and checkable. Bardon's practices are published, the adaptation is declared, and the fifty-year working period is stated rather than implied.

Tension left open. The whole section is about building the will, and the practice it culminates in is the removal of the person who would exercise it. Nothing here addresses what it means that the highest exercise in a will-building programme is the deliberate shrinking of the self toward nothing.

🚩 PRACTITIONER SOURCE. 🚩 SAFETY — deliberately shrinking one's sense of self toward nothingness can be distressing, and the only precaution offered is a reassurance. Anybody with a history of dissociation or panic should treat that as insufficient. 🚩 Bardon is credited but no page or edition is given. 🚩 Improve health and well-being is asserted without qualification.

Author Tensions & Convergences

The three exercises describe a will made entirely out of restraint, and that sits oddly against what the will is said to be for. Here it is built by not moving, not wandering, not thinking. Three prohibitions, and no positive act anywhere.

Elsewhere the Magical Will is the faculty that initiates a working, sets the terms, and directs a thought-form before handing it over. That is an active thing.

The two fit if what is being trained is the capacity to not interfere, which the rest of this body of work identifies as the actual bottleneck. The Nefesh can only work when the cage of logic stops supervising, and a person who cannot sit still for fifteen minutes certainly cannot stop supervising for the length of a working. On that reading the will is not being strengthened at all. It is being taught to stand down on command, which is a harder thing and a stranger one. Nothing here says it in those words.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Death-in-Life Practice — eastern-spirituality.

Certain Buddhist, Hindu and Sufi traditions run a practice with the same shape and a completely worked-out account of it. Death-in-Life is the deliberate dissolution of the ego-structure while the body remains alive — psychological and spiritual death before physical death. The illusion of a separate self is recognised and released, and the experience of that release mirrors the dissolution that occurs in physical death.

Which explains something this page reports without explaining. Do not worry that you will die is offered here as a reassurance, as though the fear were a misunderstanding. On the other account it is not a misunderstanding at all. The resemblance is the mechanism, and a practitioner shrinking toward nothing feels something genuinely like dying, because the practice is genuinely a rehearsal of it.

And that changes what the reassurance is doing. You will be perfectly fine is true about the body and beside the point about the fear, which is not a mistake to be corrected but the thing the exercise produces.

Which makes the difference between the two traditions a matter of framing rather than technique. The Eastern version says in advance what the dying is for: by dying before you die, what was never born is revealed. This one puts the same experience at the end of a will-building programme and gives it a functional job — achieving vigilance without thoughts. Same seconds of nothing, and one tradition has made them the point while the other has made them a tool.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The two long exercises are described as preparation for a third that lasts seconds — so thirty minutes of controlled breathing exists to buy a few moments of silence. Which is an unusual admission about the exchange rate of this kind of work, and a far more realistic one than most practices offer.

Generative questions.

  • The will is built entirely out of prohibitions. Is it being strengthened, or trained to stand down?
  • Do not worry that you will die is the whole of the precaution. Is there anywhere in the tradition an account of somebody for whom that was not enough?
  • The dot goes in the solar plexus, which is the animal self's territory. Why there rather than in the head?
