Take the project you are working on right now, or the one you are only planning. The narrator hands over a thought exercise.1 The reflex question every maker brings to a project is how do I get this done more quickly. He asks you to set that question down and run a different one. Imagine what would happen to the project, and how you would approach it, if you multiplied the amount of time you are planning to spend on it by three. Or by five. Or both.1 That is the whole exercise. You do not actually have to take more time. You just have to imagine taking it, and then watch what the imagined extra time does to your sense of the work.

What This Actually Is

This is a time-dilation thought experiment, and it works by inverting the default optimization. Almost everyone optimizes for speed without noticing they are doing it; the question "how do I get this done faster" runs underneath the whole project like a current. The exercise yanks that current to the surface and reverses it. Multiply the time by three or five and three concrete things come up for examination: how the process would change, how the use of materials would change, and whether the subject matter itself would be different.1 Those are the three knobs the narrator names. That blank — I don't know yet — is not a failure of the exercise. It is the exercise working. You are now looking at a different project than the one you walked in with.

The Multiplier Failure — Diagnostic Signs

The exercise fails when the maker answers too fast. If you can immediately say exactly what the five-times version would look like, you have not actually run it — you have just imagined doing the same fast project for longer. The tell is the absence of any I don't know yet. A real multiply-the-time pass produces at least one knob you cannot answer, because genuine extra time opens genuine uncertainty. Another failure sign: you treat the multiplier as a scheduling question ("but I don't have five times the time") and miss that it is a thought experiment, not a plan. The point is what it reveals, not what it commits you to.

Change the timescale in imagination and the idea itself changes — process, materials, even subject. This means the single most consequential decision about a piece of work may be the timescale you unconsciously assigned it at the start, and you can re-make that decision for free, in your head, by running the multiplier before you commit.
